English writer Mary Shelley began writing one of the most influential novels of the 19th century, “Frankenstein,” at the age of 18. Published in 1818, the novel garnered huge success and has become a book to remember for generations to come. On Nov. 23, the Campus Theatre screened the National Theatre (NT) production of “Frankenstein,” which is part of the NT Live Series.

The play stars Jonny Lee Miller as Frankenstein and Benedict Cumberbatch as Frankenstein’s Creature. Both actors jointly received the Olivier Best Actor award for their performances. This version of Shelley’s masterpiece tells the story from the Creature’s perspective. Director Danny Boyle, known for his work such as “Trainspotting,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “127 Hours,” took charge of this adaptation.

The story commences with the birth of the Creature and ends with him and his creator Frankenstein disappearing together. Audience members are whisked away on the Creature’s journey as he evolves into a human being while being humiliated, beaten, and rejected by everyone around him.

The adapted “Frankenstein” was produced and broadcast live in 2012 and swiftly became the most popular of the NT Live events. This is the first occasion that the NT Live series has been screened in the Campus Theatre. The series is sponsored by the Departments of Art and Art History, Classics, English, and Theatre and Dance, the Bucknell Arts Council, the Bucknell Innovation Group, and the Office of the Provost. Like other “Performance Cinema” such as the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD Series, cameras are taken into the theatre, and one live performance is broadcast throughout the world.

“Skylight,” which stars Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy, will be the last screening of the fall semester and will be shown in the Campus Theatre on Dec. 7.
