Track and field dominates meets across the nation

From April 7-8, the men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled and competed in two different meets: the IC4A Championship qualifier at Arizona State University and the George Mason Invitational.

At the IC4A qualifier, William Melchionni ’19 qualified for the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.80 seconds and the 400-meter run at 49.09 seconds. Scott Gulizio ’19 qualified for the 800-meter run, completing it in 1:52.27. For the women’s team, the 4×100 meter relay team featuring Carly Reiner ’17, Allison Sharkey ’17, Meg Sangimino ’17, and Kaitlin Salisbury ’20 qualified and recorded a top-10 school record, completing the race in 47.14 seconds.

The men’s team placed 13th among 20 universities at the George Mason Invitational. Terry Hall ’19 placed fifth in the javelin toss, throwing the javelin 187-04. Reggie Harris ’19 placed in two events, finishing fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 47-0 and a quarter and fifth in the long jump with a distance of 22-5 and a quarter.

“I was just so excited to get out there and compete. I was practically jumping for joy,” Harris said.

Christine Bendzinski ’18 ran the 800-meter run in 2:10.38, setting a personal record and becoming the fourth fastest in school history. Sarah Chandler ’17 followed Bendzinski with a time of 2:11.46, setting the record for fifth fastest time in program history. The 4×100 meter relay team made up of Michaela Mincone ’19, Taylor Kennedy ’20, Chelsea Reynolds ’19, and Kafilat Oladiran ’18 finished in 49.74 seconds, a top-10 program record. In the 4×400 meter relay, Kennedy, Mincone, Rebecca Rooney ’20, and Natalie Waterhouse ’19 placed with a time of 4:01.87. Laura Papili ’17 ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.07.

For the field events, Ella Schultz ’20 placed second in the shot put, throwing it 44-5 and a half, thus becoming the sixth farthest throw in program history. Kasey Getkin ’19 finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 130-09.

The Bison will continue their season on their home track at the Bison Outdoor Classic from April 14-15.
