Welcome back, Bucknellians! As the new school year kicks off, you might find yourself with some extra time between classes and assignments. If you’re looking for a study break or just want to explore what Lewisburg has to offer, here are some must-visit spots on and off campus!
On Campus
1. Makerspaces
Bucknell’s three on-campus makerspaces offer students the chance to innovate, create and design. Open to all students, regardless of major, these spaces are available late into the night to fit around busy class schedules. The 7th Street Studio & Makerspace, attached to 7th Street Café, is perfect for students looking to explore their creative sides, offering weekly free design classes like “Paint Your Own Yoga Mat” on Saturday, Sept. 7 and “Bucknell Themed Throw Pillows” on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Two more makerspaces are located in the Dana Engineering Building: the Maker-E and the Mooney Innovative Design Laboratory. Inside the Maker-E, students have access to cutting-edge measurement tools, design software and electronic equipment for tech-savvy students looking to improve their programming skills. The Mooney Innovative Design Laboratory features many pieces of equipment that students can use to build 3D models and product prototypes. The Lab is equipped with many 3D printers and even a laser cutter that students are welcome to use. If you trust yourself to use laser cutters and table saws without cutting off a finger, then this makerspace is for you! Anyone looking to use the equipment in the labs in Dana Engineering is required to complete extensive online training before they are allowed, to prevent any superfluous loss of limbs.
2. Weis Center for the Performing Arts
For over 35 years, the Weis Center for the Performing Arts has been a cornerstone of artistic and musical expression at Bucknell. With more than 20 shows each year, this 1,200-seat hall hosts a wide range of professional performances across genres, from jazz and contemporary dance to world music. The Weis Center aspires to connect renowned artists with the Bucknell and Lewisburg communities. By attending these performances, students and community members alike will gain an appreciation for the power of the arts and their ability to move audiences with powerful visual and auditory displays. The Weis Center is additionally meant to inspire audience members and connect them with the artists and well as one another through these shared transformative experiences. For the 2024-2025 season, attendees can purchase tickets individually or subscribe to five or more performances for a 20 percent discount, but Bucknell students can attend events for free.
3. Uptown
Looking for a place to party on the weekends? Uptown, Bucknell’s on-campus nightclub and event venue, is the place to be. Located behind Swartz Hall, Uptown hosts a variety of social events every Friday and Saturday night. Whether it’s watching a football game, playing pool or belting out karaoke with friends, Uptown has something for everyone. Don’t miss upcoming events like Hypnotist Chris Jones on Sept. 7, a Reptile Show on Sept. 14 and a performance by student band “The Priorities” on Sept. 20. Plus, free food at most events makes Uptown a student favorite!
4. Samek Art Museum
The Samek Art Museum connects Bucknell students and the Lewisburg community with thought-provoking art. With locations on campus and in downtown Lewisburg, the museum houses over 6,000 pieces of classic and contemporary artwork. The on-campus gallery, located on the top floor of the ELC, offers a convenient spot to immerse yourself in creative works, while the downtown location at 416 Market Street provides additional exhibits. Mark your calendars for the upcoming “Glitter & Trash” exhibition, with an exciting opening ceremony on Sept. 14 that features a DJ and encourages attendees to dress to fit the theme. The exhibit will run through Dec. 1.
Off Campus
1. Campus Theatre
A historic gem in downtown Lewisburg, the Campus Theatre has been entertaining the community since 1941. With its classic Art Deco architecture, the theater screens a mix of modern films, live performances and beloved classics. Thanks to a partnership with Bucknell, students can attend screenings for free as part of certain courses. This collaboration not only enriches students’ educational experiences but also integrates them into the Lewisburg community.
2. The Scratching Post Cat Café
If you’re a cat lover, the Scratching Post Cat Café is the purrfect place to visit. For just $6, you can spend time with adorable, adoptable cats, all while supporting the Cherished Cats Rescue Alliance, a local non-profit. While the café doesn’t serve food, visitors are welcome to bring their own snacks (just don’t share with the cats!). Whether you’re looking to study, read or just relax, the Scratching Post offers a cozy, feline-filled escape.
3. Lewisburg Farmers Market
Every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Lewisburg Farmers Market is filled with Bucknellians. With over 100 local vendors, the market offers everything from fresh produce and homemade baked goods to handmade jewelry and gifts. Located within close proximity to campus at 499 Fairground Road, the market is a popular spot for students to pick up unique items and enjoy delicious food. For added convenience, the Bucknell Shuttle occasionally provides transportation to the market. Don’t miss the Harvest Festival on Oct. 12, featuring live music, great food and more!
4. Hufnagle Park
Nestled between South 5th and 6th Streets along Market Street, Hufnagle Park is a favorite outdoor spot for Bucknell students. After a nearly $3 million renovation, the park reopened last spring with new amenities and a fresh look. It’s a great place to grab food from nearby Amami and enjoy a sunny day. During the warmer months, Hufnagle also hosts “Music in the Park,” a series of free musical performances. On Oct. 8, the park will be the site of the Lewisburg Fall Festival, featuring craft and food vendors, pumpkin carving and more. So embrace your inner child and take a trip down the slide at Hufnagle Park!
