Men’s Soccer hosted Navy on Saturday, Sept. 14. After a tough loss against Saint Francis, the Bison were looking to bounce back.
The Bison came out of the gate hot, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match. Cade Whitmire ’27 (transfer from Tulsa) and Cohen Weaver ’26 (transfer from Penn State) each scored, helping the Bison establish a lead early on.
Whitmire’s goal came about 12 minutes in when he received the ball with his back facing the net. A quick turn and half volley was deflected off a Midshipman defender and sent over the keeper’s head into the goal.
Weaver’s goal came not even 10 minutes later. A quick give-and-go between Whitmire and Jack Lucas ’27 started the play, then Lucas sent the ball into the box from the left. Weaver met the ball and smashed it into the goal.
The Bison saw a few more opportunities in the first half but were unable to advance their lead. They outshot Navy 9-1 in the first half alone and 18-9 overall. Navy came close to shortening the gap in the tail end of the match. A suspecting shot bounced off the crossbar and landed at the feet of a Midshipman whose rebound was saved by keeper Freddie Lapworth ’26. They saw their next attempt on a free kick about two minutes later. The ball was sent in, and Navy managed to score from inside the six, putting them on the board. With about four minutes left, the Bison led 2-1. After holding possession of the ball, the Orange and Blue managed to run the clock out and secure the win.
Lapworth finished with two saves. This win ended the Bison’s four-game losing streak against Navy.
