The men’s tennis team ended its five-game losing streak by defeating the Lafayette Leopards 5-2 on April 13 at the Sullivan Courts. Although the Bison lost to both Temple on April 12 and Lehigh on April 16, Nick Bybel ’16 broke the program’s record for single-season wins in his matches against the Leopards.
Bybel and Aidan Lynch ’14 earned the 8-4 victory against Lafayette for the only doubles victory on the day. The singles play was much more dominant, as they earned the win in five of the six matches. Bybel defeated his Leopard opponent 6-0, 6-4 to stay undefeated in Patriot League singles play. Earning the Bison’s other four triumphs was Bryan Adams ’17 (6-4, 6-0), Octavio Canibe ’15 (6-0, 6-4), Kyle Rosen ’14 (6-2, 6-4), and Jonathan DeFrancesch ’15 (6-3, 6-3).
On April 12, the Bison traveled to Temple but fell for the fifth consecutive match in a competitive 4-3 defeat. The Orange and Blue won three of their six matches in singles play, but lost in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to cede the final point to Temple. Bybel and Lynch earned the sole doubles victory (8-4), while Bybel, Adams, and Rosen helped the Bison receive three points on the day.
The Bison lost 5-2 in its most recent competition on April 16 at Lehigh. The No. 1 doubles earned yet another victory for the Bison, as Bybel and Lynch won 8-7 over their Lehigh counterparts. In singles play, Bybel came out victorious 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 while Rosen won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4.
Bybel now has 26 wins on the season, and as the No. 1 singles and doubles student-athlete, he claims the school record in only his second season of competition. He is 26-9 on the season and has eight straight victories in singles play.
The Bison, now 3-15 overall and 2-4 in Patriot League standings, have one final game at Bloomsburg on April 22 before the first round of the Patriot League Tournament begins in West Point, N.Y. on April 24.
