Heng Ji
One of the newest additions to downtown Lewisburg, Heng Ji, offers authentic Chinese dishes and drinks! Specializing in Cantonese food, the menu has expanded to include hotpot as well. Located at 428 Market Street, Heng Ji is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday except Monday. Their menu offers a wide variety of dishes, with some personal favorites being shumai, roast duck, vegetarian mapo tofu and pineapple shrimp fried rice. They also boast a large boba menu, catering to different styles, like milk teas, sparkling drinks, fruit teas and slushies. Grace’s favorite part is choosing the toppings, with options ranging from boba, cheese foam, lychee jelly and sago pearl. This spot is frequented by locals and is a great place to visit if you want a filling meal or a nice sweet snack.
Boba tea, or bubble tea, is a drink from Taiwan that has become increasingly popular in the United States over the past 30 years. Traditional boba is made out of tapioca formed into little balls or pearls before it is cooked. They take on a dark brown color and are the ‘bubble’ in bubble tea. A classic bubble, or boba tea, is made of boba and milk tea, or black tea mixed with milk. Alternatively, fruit teas and green pearl tea or green tea with boba are common offerings as well. These fun beverages are served with thick straws so that the tea and boba can be consumed at the same time. Classic milk teas have many different flavor combinations with brown sugar and hybrid fruit milk teas being fun options at many boba shops.
The fun part of ordering bubble tea is that individuals can tailor the drink to how they want it. For example, the level of sweetness can be adjusted by choosing a percentage to change the sugar level. Like coffee, you can ask for less ice, with some boba places even offering hot drinks!
Grace and Grace both ordered the classic brown sugar milk tea with boba. This is Heng Ji’s most popular drink order for a reason! We both thoroughly enjoyed the sweet tea and deliciously chewy boba. While Grace loved her drink and had “no notes,” Grace thought hers was a bit sweet, so she went back later on in the week to order hers with 30% sugar, which made it “just about perfect!”
Overall Rating: 4.7 out of 5
Flavor – The milk tea was yummy, and the texture of the pearls were perfect. Grace has tried other drinks from Heng Ji, her favorites being the Mango Pomelo Sago and Crème Brulée Milk Tea.
Fun – Boba is so much fun, and good boba is even more fun… so you know what that means… Heng Ji is so much fun!!!
Fame – The popularity of Heng Ji has certainly grown since their opening back in November. Given that there are no other places around that offer boba on their menu, Heng Ji has tapped into a market that Lewisburg has yet to grow. In addition to the delicious drinks, students frequently visit to get a taste of authentic Chinese flavors that are difficult to find in other places in Lewisburg.
Funds – The prices of drinks are on the higher range, as a medium sized boba is $7, while a large is $8, and extra topping costs $1 each. However, Heng Ji has a deal where if you order an entree, you can make it a combo and add a boba drink for $5!
