Bison women’s lacrosse fall just short
April 22, 2022
Bison women’s lacrosse lost a tough battle against American University last Saturday, April 16. Taylor Kopan ’24 contributed four goals, Allie Boyce ’25 scored three and Taylor McClain ’25 also added a goal along with four assists. Even with this stellar performance, American scored with 1:26 left to break the 11-11 tie and win the game for the Eagles. This loss leaves the Lady Bison at 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League.
The Orange and Blue had an admittedly slow start, ending the first quarter with only one goal while American put up three. Entering the second quarter, the Lady Bison pushed for four more goals and in the final minutes of the half. McClain, along with Emma Cashwell ’22 and Boyce, each contributed a goal to lift the Bison 8-5 over American going into halftime.
A battle in the second half allowed American to heat up and without Caroline Miller’s ’23 big-time goal at the end of the third, the Orange and Blue would have only been up by one going into the final quarter of the game. Even with this two-goal lead, American came back swinging and took their lead only a few minutes into the fourth quarter. Still, off of Cashwell’s attempt, Kopan earned herself and the Lady Bison another goal and a lead with 2:49 remaining.
Taking advantage of a few calls from the refs, American was able to score two goals in the final two minutes of the game leaving the score 12-11 and Bison with a loss.
Senior Emma Cashwell spoke on the game. “It was a heartbreaking loss. American was strong but we struggled to connect all across the field and it came down to the wire.”
“We are looking forward to this week and we are working hard to secure a spot in the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in my four years,” Cashwell said.
The Orange & Blue travel to face No. 6 Loyola at 7 p.m. on Wednesday April 20. They will play their Senior Day game against Boston University at Graham Field on Saturday April 23 at 2 p.m.
