Last Friday, Grace and I drove down to Eagles Wind Coffee House in Shamokin Dam. Right on Route 15, before you get into Selinsgrove, we had often driven past it on our way to Target or Community Aid, and we thought it was time we stopped in! Offering both drive-thru and dine-in options, Eagles Wind had a good flow of customers coming through. We were surprised to find that not only was there an array of offerings, but this spot seemed to be a local favorite!
While it is called Eagles Wind Coffee House, I think we can both agree that the main event was the donuts! The donuts are what inspired us to go to Eagles Wind, and when we walked in, they grabbed our attention. With over 25 different flavors, they have something for everyone (except maybe people who are gluten-free or vegan). While Grace followed her heart’s desire for her order, grabbing a peanut butter cup donut recommended by the barista, Grace stayed true to our coffee mission and ordered a “coffee break” donut.
With our donuts in hand, we moved on to ordering the drinks; there was a wide variety of drinks to choose from. Their menu featured signature lattes, seasonal offerings, classic specialty coffees, tea-based drinks and energy drink alternatives called Lotus. We figured with a selection this vast, we couldn’t go wrong. Sadly, we were mistaken. Grace ordered the signature iced cinnamon roll latte, and Grace grabbed the seasonal iced brown sugar apple latte. The cinnamon roll latte was fine, with a very bitter, almost stale coffee taste covered up by very sweet syrups. The iced brown sugar apple latte is the drink that soured our opinion of Eagles Wind. The fake apple taste was overwhelming and stayed in our mouths long after we had stopped drinking it. We would not recommend ordering it.
Overall rating – 2.2
While we enjoyed the donuts, Grace and I agree that we will not be returning for coffee any time soon.
Flavor – The coffee was thoroughly disappointing. The brown sugar apple latte, while it sounds like yummy fall flavors, failed to deliver in many ways. The sourness of the apple flavor did not mix well with the subtle sweetness of the brown sugar and the bitterness of coffee. The iced cinnamon roll latte was better, as the mix of cinnamon flavor and vanilla sweetness meshed with the coffee. However, more sips of both drinks did not serve us well.
Fun – The space itself was cute! There were lots of plants and a more rustic vibe. The donuts were on display, and there was a variety of menus showcasing different drink options and food items.
Fame – While we have not heard much talk about Eagles Wind from Bucknell students, it seemed to be a hotspot for Shamokin Dam residents and Susquehanna University students. There was a mixture of older folks grabbing a meal, young families coming for a treat and college students getting their caffeine fix.
Funds – Both drinks came out to around $6, and the donuts were a little less than $2. While we would definitely come back and treat ourselves to a donut, we’re hesitant to recommend this cafe on the coffee front.
