I was wrong: Billy Maximoff isn’t Agatha’s son. She didn’t trade her child for the Book of the Damned and though she didn’t entirely change, her character arc took some unexpected turns. But, hey, I was right about Aubrey Plaza’s screen time!
Season One of “Agatha All Along” came to a close, leaving us with thrilling twists and memorable scenes. From Wanda’s magical delusions to Billy’s eerie mirroring of her powers, we’ve witnessed a series full of complex relationships and emotional payoffs. Lilia Calderu’s tragic but fated journey and Agatha’s transition from villain to mentor have left us with much to discuss. At its core, this show has captured the mystical and motherly dimensions of Agatha Harkness, a witch marked by loss, love and power.
Bravo, Marvel!
A Beautiful Cinematic Journey
From the get-go, “Agatha All Along” has been a visual treat. The rich colors, cinematography and spells transported us into a captivating, darkly whimsical world that felt distinct from other Marvel shows. While Marvel’s attention to detail in the design of Agatha’s world made for a fun watch, it’s what the actors did on set that brought it together, making every trail and dialogue resonate.
And then came the twist—Billy’s accidental creation of the Witches’ Road, which, in hindsight, explains the confused look on Agatha’s face by the road’s sudden appearance. But she wasn’t completely innocent; she feigned the existence of the road to steal the other witches’ power. Having that plan detoured, she sat by, carving the road through conversational subliminals to Billy to make the road do what she wanted. In the end, it really was “Agatha All Along.” She killed those witches by keeping silent about what she knew about Billy.
I was only able to get over Lilia’s death knowing it was her journey, but shame on you, Agatha!
What a Mother Would Do for Her Child
While my theory that Billy was Agatha’s son was debunked, the show delivered an even more compelling maternal storyline. Agatha’s motivations, while darkened by her need for power, are rooted in a fierce desire to protect those she loves… well, loved. In flashbacks, we learn that she was nuking other witches so that Rio Vidal, or Death, wouldn’t take her son, Nicholas Scratch. By the way, why didn’t Marvel give us that backstory? They can’t just drop the lore without the lore.
Anyway, this complex portrayal of family resonates with Marvel’s recent themes of family showing the ways in which love and ambition can both uplift and destroy. Both the Kiss of Death scene, where Agatha sacrifices her soul to save Billy, and her earlier pursuits for the Book of the Damned for her son show the lengths Agatha’s willing to go for just him. While she still may be evil, she’s humane now… I hope.
Thank You, Marvel, for Aubrey Plaza Screen Time
I mean, I wasn’t wrong about that one. Plaza brought her signature quirk and intensity to the role, keeping us captivated in every scene. As Rio’s relationship with Agatha evolved from lovers to fiery rivalry to mutual understanding, Plaza’s chemistry with Kathryn Hahn brought emotional layers to their rivalry, especially during the Kiss of Death. It will no doubt be remembered as one of the season’s most captivating dynamics. Agatha may not have been able to change her, but I swear I can. I love you, Aubrey Plaza!
What’s Next for Agatha and Billy?
The season’s finale brings Agatha’s character full circle as she embraces a mentor role, transitioning from a villain to a morally gray figure. No, literally, she turns into a ghost. In a surprising twist, ghost Agatha seems to become a guide for Billy on a new journey, searching for Tommy Maximoff. I would love to say that it’s for redemptive reasons, but it’s the only way she can escape having to see her son again, who she thinks will hate her. All in all, this season proved that Agatha is not just a witch seeking power but a mother, a survivor and a woman whose choices define her destiny.
But, the finale may have left us with more questions than answers, like:
Is Wanda really dead?
Will Evan Peters be back?
Will Aubrey Plaza visit me if I die?
Will there be a Season 2?
Only time will tell.
