Bucknell’s Club Hockey team is making waves this season with an impressive 5-0 record, including impressive victories over Gettysburg, Susquehanna, Shippensburg, PSU Altoona and Kutztown. The team’s recent history, which includes a championship win and two finals appearances in the past three years, has set high expectations, and this year’s squad looks prepared to meet them.
One of the most notable aspects of this year’s team is their chemistry, which has played a crucial role in their early success. Senior and team captain Jared Kordonsky reflected on this, saying, “This year’s team chemistry is some of the best I’ve seen on the team in my four years playing. Having cohesive conversations with players among all grades is impressive considering the size of this year’s team. We went from having a small team of about 15 guys where we were almost forced to talk to one another to now about 30 guys, and the cohesiveness feels even more natural. This has clearly translated on the ice as our communication during play and team camaraderie from the bench has been vocal.”
That unity isn’t just limited to the ice. Club hockey at Bucknell has become a cornerstone experience for many players, providing a fun, inclusive environment that bridges different years and backgrounds. Kordonsky shared, “Bucknell hockey was a great way for me to get out and meet new people, particularly in my freshman year. I have lasting friendships from the first day of practice my freshman year until now. Since the hockey team is made up of players from different fraternities, I feel like it’s a great way to branch into different groups of people and not close yourself off to one particular group of people.”
Despite their dominating record and the strong sense of camaraderie, the team faces challenges, particularly in terms of funding. Unlike varsity teams that receive university funding, the club hockey team relies entirely on player contributions. This means that every player must pay to play, which can be a financial strain and limit some students’ participation. The lack of funding also impacts other aspects of the program, from securing ice time to arranging transport for away games.
One of the biggest challenges for the team is getting enough players to attend away games that are far, especially on weekends. With classes, exams and other commitments, convincing upperclassmen to make these trips can be tough. Kordonsky noted that the burden often falls on first years to show up for these games, but even with a younger roster on the road, the team has still managed to come away with wins. It’s a testament to the depth of the roster and the determination of the players, who come together to support one another no matter who is on the ice.
Unlike many other teams that focus heavily on preparation rituals and strict routines, Bucknell’s club hockey maintains a laid-back atmosphere. While they may not have elaborate warm-ups or a strong social media presence, they show up and play with heart—and it works. This approach, paired with the coaching style of Coach Bisaccia, who fosters creativity and instinctive play, has helped the team build confidence and a dynamic play style. Players have the freedom to trust their instincts and adapt to the flow of the game, which has been key to their on-ice success.
The team’s diverse backgrounds and relaxed but competitive spirit make club hockey at Bucknell more than just a sport—it’s a space where students forge meaningful connections. This environment has proven especially valuable for first years and newcomers, offering a welcoming space where players can bond, find their footing at Bucknell and form friendships that last long after the season ends. The club fosters a sense of community that extends beyond the rink, making it a truly integral part of college life for those involved.
Looking ahead, the team knows that maintaining momentum will be key as the season progresses. Their early wins have set a solid foundation, but there’s more to come, and consistency will be crucial. The players are focused on taking each game as it comes and supporting each other through every challenge, whether on or off the ice. With a blend of experience, fresh talent and team-wide commitment, the Bison are set to continue their successful run this season.
Bucknell’s club hockey team is proving that success doesn’t come from one or two-star players but from a collective effort and a strong bond among teammates. It’s this spirit that has carried them to a dominant start and will push them to keep striving for more as the season unfolds. The support from the Bucknell community, the friendships built through the team and the passion for the game are what make this season, and every season, special.
