Women’s swim & dive jump out of regular season at unscored Navy Invite
February 6, 2014
The women’s swimming and diving team finished its regular season on Feb. 1 with an unscored meet at Navy.
“I think we did well.” Kelly Pontecorvo ’14 said. “We were at the Naval Academy where championships are going to take place so our goal was to practice and try to perfect racing in that environment and I think we did a very good job.”
The Bison traveled to Annapolis, Md. to compete in a meet against Navy, American, Army, and Lehigh. Because the meet was unscored, many members of the team took the opportunity to participate in events that they do not normally swim in competition.
“It was a lot of fun for the team getting to swim some different events. Everybody was up and cheering for one another the whole time, even when it started to get a bit long to be there,” Amber McDonnell ’17 said.
The Orange and Blue had some exciting top finishers on the day, with Emma Levendoski ’16, Ashley Henderson ’16, Kristen Purdy ’14, and Kaitlyn Utkewicz ’14 leading the way in the 200 medley relay. Levendoski also took second in the 100 meter free, while Henderson earned another gold medal for the Bison with a first place performance in the 200 meter IM.
Many other individuals also contributed strong performances in the meet, including Melissa Besman ’14 with her first place finish in the 400 meter IM. Stephanie Koziol ’15 placed second in the 1650 meter free, and Rachel Perry ’17 also earned a runner-up finish in the 200 meter back. Caroline Orem ’17 took third in the 400 meter IM and Lauren Perry ’15 took third in the 500 meter free to round out the top finishes for the Bison.
“As we near championships I think we can best work on winning those close races and really getting our hands on the wall first. To win the league we are going to have to out-touch a lot of people,” McDonnell said.
Now that the Orange and Blue have completed their regular season, they will take the next couple of weeks to prepare for the postseason. The Bison will compete in the Patriot League Championships on Feb. 19-22 at Navy.
