Women’s captures second of six in last home meet
April 24, 2014
The women’s track and field team competed in its last home meet of the year on April 19 when it hosted the Bucknell Team Challenge at the Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. In their second scored meet of the outdoor season, the Bison placed second out of seven teams, with numerous individual scorers leading the way for the Orange and Blue.
“The team challenge was a good meet for the women’s track and field team. The great weather really helped everyone improve their times and distances,” Sarah Chandler ’17, “The meet was pretty tough but everyone competed up to the competition causing a lot of personal bests. We are getting stronger and stronger every meet and I am sure everyone is getting pumped for the patriot leagues next weekend at Navy.”
Top scorers in the sprint events included Kim Nagotko ’15 and Jennifer Zymet ’14. Nagotko finished second in the 100-meter run (12.13) and tied with Zymet for sixth in the 200-meter run (25.01). Zymet also won the 400-meter run in 55.60, qualifying her for the ECACs. Jenn Silvestri ’16 finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.24), while teammate Hana Casalnova ’14 won the 800-meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:10.29.
The distance squad showed their strength as well. Justine Schnell ’15 finished the 3,000-meter race with a winning time of 10:04.33. Teammates Michaella Irvine ’17 and Sarah Decker ’17 also finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Sarah Chandler ’17 secured a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter race (4:36.38).
“It was a great day for competition and I’m happy with the way we performed, I feel like our team is definitely ready to compete in the Patriot League Outdoor Championships and avenge our poor finish at the Indoor Championships,” Irvine said.
Strong performances were also turned in by the field athletes. Sophia Nnadi ’16 captured two third-place finishes in the shot put and discus and a fifth-place finish in the hammer. Alyssa Cardillo ’14 finished third in the long jump, and teammate Autumn Schellenberger ’14 finished sixth in the pole vault.
While some members traveled to Philadelphia yesterday to compete in the Penn Relays, which will take place from April 24-26, the rest of the team will be competing at Bloomsburg tomorrow in the Maroon and Gold Invitational.
