The baseball team opened its season on Feb. 14, in Winston-Salem, N.C., home to Wake Forest University. After initially having four games scheduled, the weather forced plans to be rearranged to just two games instead, one against Georgetown University to open the season and the other against the host Demon Deacons.

The first game of the day began as a blow-out in the fourth inning, as the Hoyas built a 7-0 lead. The Orange and Blue would eventually chip away at the lead, scoring four in the bottom of the sixth and one in the ninth to finish with an 8-5 loss to Georgetown. Anthony Gingerelli ’15 and Joe Ogren ’16 had two hits each against the Hoyas. Andrew Andreychik ’16 (0-1) started on the mound and pitched until the fourth inning. Xavier Hammond ’15 and Jordan Holtz ’15 made appearances from the bullpen.

In the second game of the young season, the Bison went head-to-head with the Demon Deacons and came out hot early with 13 runs in the first three innings and eventually held a 13-2 advantage going into the sixth. The Demon Deacons then scored six, followed by a Bison response of three runs in the top of ninth, with the Deacons closing the game with four runs. Tucker Rekucki ’15 came on and closed three of the five hitters he faced in the closing inning.

The firepower behind the Bison’s offensive splurge in the 16-12 victory came from eight of the nine starters finishing with at least a hit and seven different players driving in at least a run. Leadoff man Brett Smith ’17 went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, with Gingerelli following up behind with a 3-for-5 performance as well with one run RBI. Ogren finished his second game with a 3-for-5, three runs, and two RBI performances. Bryson Hough ’15 (1-0) earned the win for the Bison as he pitched five innings, allowing five hits, two runs, while striking out five. Dan Keller ’16, Mike Korchak ’18, and Mike Castellani ’17 also saw time on the mound.

Due to inclement weather, the Bison’s three-game series at UNC and Greensboro Feb. 20-22 has been cancelled. Their next scheduled games are two doubleheaders, on Feb. 28 and March 1.
