Volleyball competes in back to back matches versus Lehigh and Lafayette

The women’s volleyball team played 10 sets against fellow Patriot League opponents Lehigh and Lafayette over the Oct. 2-3 weekend, falling to Lehigh but prevailing over Lafayette.
After a full five sets against Lehigh, the women’s volleyball team fell 3-2 in Davis Gym on Oct. 2, evening the Bison’s record to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. The final scores read 25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, and 15-6 with the teams fighting back and forth to gain control of the match. The numbers demonstrate a significant improvement from the two 3-0 defeats the Bison suffered last season.
Karen Campbell ’16 led the team with another outstanding performance by adding eight block assists and sharing a total of 15 kills apiece with fellow teammate Blake Buchholz ’19. Meghan Wentzel ’16 finished with 47 assists; it was the fifth time she eclipsed 40 this season after doing so just four times all of last season. Jordan Walker ’17 paced the team with 18 digs, followed by Hailey Stout ’18 with 15. The Bison finished with 12 blocks, which included six assists from Walker and five from Stout.
The Orange and Blue then traveled to Easton, Pa. and trumped Lafayette 3-2 at the Kirby Sports Center on Oct. 3. This victory improved the Orange and the Blue to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League. With scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 27-29 and 15-7, the match ended in the Bison’s favor.
Just one day after recording her 47 assists against Lehigh, Wentzel set a career-high with 50 assists in this victory over Lafayette. With Wentzel leading the team, four other Bison athletes contributed double-digit kills, which included 17 by Campbell, 14 by Walker, 13 by Stout, and 10 by Buchholz. In total, the Bison had 13 blocks. Erika Eastley ’17 tallied five blocks, including one solo, and Wentzel had four block assists. The Bison ranked third in the Patriot League in blocks entering the match.
Setter Maria Balus ’19 won the Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor for the third time in the past four weeks. She played an impressive and aggressive game, making 61 assists, 14 digs, and two block assists.
For their next match, the Bison will be hosting Loyola Maryland in Davis Gym at 7 p.m. for a Patriot League contest on Oct. 9.
