Impressive 3-1 weekend features Konishi and Marrs for women’s water polo

Emily Konishi ’19 and Eleanor Marrs ’16 led the Bison in a successful 3-1 weekend, as the women’s water polo team held the Bison Invitational at Kinney Natatorium from Feb. 27-28. The Orange and Blue (No. 25) had one loss against No. 20 Wagner.
The first two games on Feb. 27 added to a previous three-game winning streak. The Bison pulled out a win against George Washington, with an ending score of 13-7. During this game, seven different Bison scored goals, and four contributed assists. Manuela Herrera ’18 started in goal and aided the success of the game with five saves. The Orange and Blue were able to capitalize on their six-on-five opportunities with five goals out of seven tries, while George Washington only scored one out of their five attempts. Hannah Sunday ’16 drew five ejections and two steals during this game, while co-captain Marrs had three goals, two assists, and four steals.
The second game was a face-off against Gannon. The victory was a team effort as 11 different players scored for the Bison. Konishi starred in this game with a career high of four goals and two assists. Defense also had 27 steals, which was dubbed as a season-high for the Bison. Shyla Lintz ’18, Konishi, and Marta Considine ’18 all had four steals during this game. After three periods the score was 14-2, and the Orange and Blue were able hold out for a victory over the Golden Knights.
On the next day of the Invitational, the Bison took on the Wagner Seahawks, but fell in a 10-6 loss. Wagner held the Bison scoreless until mid-way through the second period. Marrs had three goals, all on penalty shots. Marrs also had two assists, which added to her career point of 98 total. Haley Derrod ’17 led the team from in goal, stopping nine shots for the Bison. She now has 27 saves in her four starts this season.
The final game against VMI was a success, adding to the Bison’s overall record of 7-5. They won with an ending score of 15-8, with a half-time score of 10-4. Marrs had four goals, while Konishi and Sunday both had three goals apiece. Seven different players scored during this game. Notably, Sunday also drew seven ejections to add to her season total of 54, a team-best. Defense had 26 steals—one shy of their new record from the Saturday game against Gannon.
The Orange and Blue will be playing March 5-6 at the Wolverine Invitational, where they will take on George Washington, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, and UCLA.
