Women’s water polo collects most season wins since 2010

The women’s water polo team traveled to Princeton, N.J. to wrap up its regular season on April 16-17. The Bison had four contests against ranked opponents, No. 6 Michigan, No. 18 Harvard, No. 13 Indiana, and No. 15 Princeton.
On April 16, the Bison had a rough start with a 16-4 loss to Michigan. Shyla Lintz ’18, Eliza Romeyn ’19, Emily Konishi ’19, and Katherine DeRuff ’16 all contributed to the Bison offense, but their efforts were not enough to defeat the Wolverines.
Later in the day, the Orange and Blue rallied to defeat Harvard 7-6, the Orange and Blue’s first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Bison took an early 4-1 lead. Harvard battled back, but the three consecutive goals from Eleanor Marrs ’16 and Colleen Barron ’18 closed the matchup for a Bison win. Manuela Herrera ’18 had a strong performance in goal with her season high 10 saves, while Hannah Sunday ’16 drew five ejections. Sunday was later named the 5th Quarter Fresh Bison Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
On April 17, the Orange and Blue first faced Indiana, losing a close match 13-11. Sunday, Tegan Stanbach ’17, Konishi, and Marrs were all huge offensive contributors with multiple goals each. Barron and Marta Considine ’18 also scored one goal apiece. Haley Derrod ’17 performed in goal with five saves against the Hoosiers. The Bison were able to hold onto a 9-9 tie with the Hoosiers until the final period, when they were outscored and topped 13-11.
The Bison once again followed up a tough loss with a close win against Princeton later that day. The Orange and Blue have not won against Princeton since 2010. Sunday led the team with five goals, her season high. Sunday’s performance over the weekend of April 16-17 brought her goal total to a team-high of 67. Stanbach, Marrs, Considine, Barron, and Kendyl Johnson ’18 all contributed goals as well. Derrod posted eight saves against the Tigers. The Bison led the Tigers the entire game, ending with a 10-9 win.
The Orange and Blue improved to 16-14 overall to conclude the regular season, tallying the most wins the team has had since 2010. The Bison will compete in the CWPA Championship on April 29-May 1, where they are seeded third out of nine teams.
