DeBoer leads Bison to dominating 79-49 win at Colgate

The Bison women’s basketball team is back on the winning path after a decisive victory against Colgate on Feb. 11 on the Raiders’ home court. This triumph followed their Feb. 8 win against Lehigh at Sojka Pavilion. The two wins bring their season record to 19-5 overall.
The Orange and Blue foreshadowed a promising outcome in the opening minute. In the first 30 seconds, Kaitlyn Slagus ’19 started the game off strong with a layup, coming on an assist by Claire DeBoer ’17. Kyi English ’19 contributed two consecutive 3-pointers before the end of the first 60 seconds. After this strong start, the Bison led 24-14 at the end of the first period before widening the gap to an impressive 48-25 at the half.
“We knew we needed to set the tone from the beginning. We played with a lot of energy and worked hard on defense. Everyone on the team contributed, which is what we need to be successful,” Kate Walker ’19 said.
DeBoer was the game’s lead scorer, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Sune Swart ’17 secured a respectable 16 points and nine rebounds. Walker finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and Slagus tallied 11 points and six rebounds.
The Orange and Blue made nine 3-pointers in the contest, led by Walker converting three of four attempts. The Bison shot 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc, while holding Colgate to 22 percent from the three-point line. The Orange and Blue also shot an impressive 87.5 percent from the free throw line during the first half, finishing at 73.7 percent for the game. DeBoer made all five of her attempts from the line, while Swart shot six of eight from the stripe.
The Orange and Blue return to action at home in Sojka Pavilion on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. against Boston University. In their first meeting of the season, the Bison beat the Terriers 66-50. The Bison stand tied with Navy at the top of the Patriot League standings; both teams boast records of 11-2 in the conference.
