BSG announces WSJ online access for students, faculty

The Bucknell Student Government (BSG) announced the return of the Wall Street Journal to campus, which students and faculty are able to access online by creating an account with their University email.
BSG President Amanda Battle ’18 sent an email to the student body on Feb. 27 detailing how students can access the publication through the Wall Street Journal’s website.
“I was sitting in the BSG office during my office hours about a month ago, and a student came into my office and said, ‘I want the Wall Street Journal back,’” Battle said. “I did some research about the subscriptions the WSJ offers to colleges, and then together with my advisor Dean Conrad, we called the Wall Street Journal.”
BSG Congress passed the motion for funding and the initiative was passed. All students, faculty, and staff have online access to the Wall Street Journal for one year, with BSG funding access for students and the Office of the President funding access for faculty and staff.
“Earlier in the semester we brought back The [New York] Times, which is a left-leaning publication. I felt it was appropriate to balance out the perspective by bringing a more central, right-leaning publication back to campus, too,” Battle said. “As college students, it’s important we remain on top of current events and receive news from a variety of sources.”
The importance of having reliable sources of news readily available for students to use for class and personal development was echoed by some students.
“Especially in this politically dividing time, giving students the privilege of free access to this news source is encouraging students to develop a well-rounded and knowledgeable mind to what is going on in our country as well as in our world today,” Emma Benson-Xu ’17 said.
“Coming back to Bucknell after the summer and not having that ability [to read it every day], especially since we’ve had it before, kind of sucked. Its pretty awesome that Bucknell is bringing the WSJ back and giving those who love to read it an outlet to do so,” Anthony Paolella ’18 said.
