Volleyball surpasses 2016 season win total
September 21, 2017
Bison volleyball went 1-2 on Sept. 15-16 at the Red Flash Classic, concluding non-league play and improving their overall record to 6-6. The six wins they’ve notched this season already exceed the team’s total from the 2016 season.
During the first match of the tournament against St. Francis, the Bison were swept 3-0. However, the set scores were well-contested at 25-21, 25-23, and 25-20. Luz Nagle ’18 led the team with 25 assists and Brooke Stark ’20 had 18 digs. Mimi Richards ’20 and Sophie Bullard ’20 both had 10 kills apiece.
Morehead State dominated play on Sept. 16, stumping the usually strong defense for the Orange and Blue. While the Bison are allowing an average opponent hitting percent of .191 this season, Morehead State hit .326 in the match. The Orange and Blue also average 2.7 blocks a set, and only had four in the entire contest.
Richards had a strong offensive game, with a hitting average of .500 and eight kills. Stefanie Alpert ’18 and Bullard both had seven kills each.
To close the tournament, the Orange and Blue pulled out a win in their second match on Sept. 16 in a four-set victory over Norfolk State. Bullard had a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. Alpert had a solid game with 12 kills, while Richards and Hailey Stout ’18 added 10 kills apiece.
“I feel that the team showed a lot of resilience this weekend. We had a bit of a rough start, but we came together to overcome our frustrations and have a much better day on Saturday,” Alpert said.
Alpert, who finished with 19 kills and two blocks over two matches, joined Bullard, Richards, and Blake Buchholz ’19 on the All-Tournament Team.
“This preseason really prepared us for what we are going to be seeing in the Patriot League and we’re really looking forward to opening league play against Army and Colgate this weekend. Our team is so talented and I think with the right leadership, attitude, and execution we can be very successful this year,” Selby Schnobrich ’20 said.
The Bison will start their Patriot League play this week in the Davis Gym, hosting Army West Point on Sept. 22 and Colgate on Sept. 23.
