Art students showcase a semester’s worth of work

The art and art history department held their annual open house on Nov. 2 at the Art Barn, a converted dairy barn located on West Campus that now provides classroom and workshop spaces. Students involved with photography, printmaking, sculpture, painting, drawing, and graphic and web design were able to showcase the artwork and hands-on projects that they have completed this semester.
Printmaking students displayed self-portraits using the method of chine collé, which creates the effect of a superimposed collage. Drawing students showed how they use their talent and skills with charcoal to complete skeleton drawings. Sculpture students showcased creative, large wire hangings with white paper in different shapes and sizes. Students in painting classes exhibited still lifes and self-portraits, while graphic design students completed poster advertisements promoting events at the University’s Weis Center for the Peforming Arts. Lastly, photography students displayed photos that were inspired by the work of famous photographers, who they reenacted as they presented their artwork.
“I thought the showcase was really successful in displaying the artistic talent of Bucknell students. We all have such individual approaches making and experiencing art, and being able to celebrate our unique perspectives in a way that brings the community together was pretty cool to be a part of,” Emily McCarthy ’19, one of the student photographers, said.
“It was great to see so many people come out and support the art department and get an inside look at our progress thus far. I hope to participate in more open houses to display my work in the future!” Meg Westrum ’19, another student photographer, said.
Refreshments and appetizers were provided by University Dining Services, and music was performed by students. University shuttles ran from 5 p.m. onward, traveling between Vedder Hall and the Art Barn in order to provide students with accessible transportation to and from the event.
