Across the University’s campus, Valentine’s Day was celebrated with flowers, candy, and songs all purchased to benefit philanthropic causes.

Kappa Delta Rho fraternity participated in its spring philanthropy event this week, “Kappa Delta Rhoses.” During the days leading up to the holiday, the brothers sold flowers and personally delivered them on Valentine’s Day.

“All of the proceeds are donated to the B+ Foundation, who provide emotional and financial support for families affected by pediatric cancer,” president of KDR Jake Rubin ’19 said. Each year, KDR orders about 300 flowers and almost always sells out, raising between $500 and $900 in total.

The members of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sold “Kappa Kisses” to students all week for their spring philanthropy event. Students could purchase Hershey Kisses to anonymously send to friends, loved ones, or any student they want to surprise with candy for the holiday.

Hershey kisses were on sale in the Elaine Langone Center mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. all week, and in the Bertrand Library Feb. 13-14, priced at $2 for one bag and $5 for three. The proceeds go to Reading is Fundamental, an organization that provides reading programs to impoverished schools, and the Kappa Foundation, which gives scholarships to women in addition to emergency grants.

“We also personally work with the Head Start program in Milton,” Philanthropy Chair of Kappa Kappa Gamma Kaitlin Stansel ’20 said.

The University’s coed a cappella group, Beyond Unison, allowed students to order “singing valentines” to send to people on campus. A tradition for the past four years, members go all over campus, singing live songs to recipients of singing valentines.

The four song choices were “Beautiful Soul” by Jesse McCartney, Disney’s “Love is an Open Door,” “My Girl” by The Temptations, and “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars.

Members receive the recipient’s schedule, and find a time to sing to them.

“Last year we did 80 in-person singing valentines all over campus, from bio labs (with professor permission) to the Gateways,” president of Beyond Unison Kyle Cohick ’20 said.

The group also records singing videos and sends them to families and off-campus friends.
