Women’s basketball wins ninth straight
February 22, 2018
The Bison women’s basketball team tallied its eighth straight win on Feb. 17 after defeating Holy Cross 72-63. With the win, the team sealed a top-three seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
Kaitlyn Slagus ’19 led the way for the Orange and Blue with 18 points and 10 rebounds, contributing her eighth double-double of the season. Kyi English ’19 and Ellie Mack ’20 also contributed 10 points apiece. The Bison shot 45 percent for the game.
“I think the first 25 minutes we played really well [because] we worked the ball around, found open shots, and we were getting stops on defense. This led to easy transition baskets and helped us build a comfortable lead,” Slagus said.
The Bison dominated the majority of the game, entering halftime with a commanding 44-17 lead. Their lead reached a high of 35 points midway through the second half. The Crusaders attempted to rally during the fourth quarter with 30 points, but it was too late.
“We let up the last 15 minutes when Holy Cross was going on their run. Thankfully, we were still about to get the win, but I think we could have finished the game a lot stronger overall,” Slagus said.
Defensively, the Bison forced the Crusaders into 20 turnovers and had 15 steals. Ten players tallied steals for the Orange and Blue, with Catherine Romaine ’18 leading with three. Romaine, Slagus, and MK Moore ’20 dominated in the post with two blocks a piece.
On Feb. 21, the Bison picked up their ninth straight win, overcoming Navy 49-40. Led by Slagus, Mack, and Kate Walker ’19, the team halted Navy’s 16-game winning streak. This victory resulted in sole possession of second place in Patriot League standings.
Ever since their loss against Loyola on Jan. 17, the Bison have been unstoppable. The team has one goal on their minds: another Patriot League Championship. The Bison are now 19-8 overall and 13-3 in the Patriot League with two games remaining in the regular season schedule. The Orange and Blue return to action on Feb. 24 when they host first-place American, who are undefeated in Patriot League play.
