The women’s water polo team competed at St. Francis University on March 23-24. The Orange and Blue put up a fight against Indiana, George Washington, and host Saint Francis, resulting in a 2-1 record for the weekend. During the last game, Marta Considine ’18 netted the 100th goal of her collegiate career.

In their first game of the day, the Bison lost 11-8 against Indiana. Ally Furano ’21 led the way for the Orange and Blue with four goals and two ejections, while Emily Konishi ’19 scored two goals, tallied two assists, and led with three steals.

Despite the early loss, the Bison were able to secure a 8-7 win in an overtime thriller later that evening against the George Washington Colonials. The Bison had to rally from behind, scoring two last-minute goals in the fourth quarter. Once in overtime, the Bison scored three times in the first extra frame, building in an 8-5 lead. George Washington was only able to score two goals in the second extra frame, sealing the victory for the Orange and Blue. Konishi scored the game-tying goal during regulation, and Furano recorded both her goals in overtime. Konishi finished with three goals and one assist, Colleen Barron ’18 had one goal and two assists, and Gigi Rojahn ’20 finished with one goal and two assists. Shyla Lintz ’18, Barron, and Rojahn led the team with two ejections apiece.

“We played three very exciting games at St. Francis this weekend. Unfortunately, their pool is shallow-deep rather than an all deep pool, so it really changes how the game is played in a way we were not used to. This was definitely a challenge that we had to adjust to throughout each game, but we managed to play well together, especially defensively, which led us to a pair of wins,” Barron said.

On the second day of competition, the Orange and Blue collected another victory against the Red Flash of Saint Francis by a score of 15-9. Nina Benson ’20 led the Bison with four goals, while Considine and Barron added three each. The Bison pulled off the win thanks to strong second and third quarters, where they outscored the Red Flash 12-4.

Furano added two goals to the total, while Konishi, Lintz, and Kali Hyham ’21 each contributed one. The Bison’s 15 total goals tied for its second highest total in the 2018 season.

“Our games were good practice for when we play these teams again for our official league games. In practice over the next couple weeks, we will work on what we need to do better for those games so that we are prepared,” Barron said.

Next up is a match against Mercyhurst on March 31 at 3 p.m. for the final home game of the regular season. The team will celebrate Barron, Considine, Manuela Herrera ’18, and Lintz during their Senior Day festivities.
