Men’s water polo goes 2-1 in weekend road games
October 5, 2018
The Bison men’s water polo team resumed play with matches this past weekend against Navy and George Washington on Sept. 29 and Johns Hopkins on Sept. 30. The Bison emerged with two wins over Navy and Johns Hopkins, but fell to George Washington. The weekend action improved the Orange and Blue’s record to 10-2 on the season.
In the match against George Washington, the Bison fell behind early after the Colonials started the match by scoring six goals. The Bison ultimately lost by a score of 20-9. Rade Joksimovic ’20 led the Bison in scoring with three goals, eclipsing the 400-point mark for his career. In the cage, keeper Jack Otto ’22 came up with nine saves.
Later that afternoon, the Orange and Blue bounced back in a 12-8 victory over Navy. The team adjusted to playing in a shallower pool than what they were used to.
“After the GW game, the team got well adjusted to playing in such conditions which led to finishing the weekend with two wins beside the loss against GW,” attack Marko Djordjevic ’19 said.
The Bison never trailed against the Navy Midshipmen as they controlled the match throughout the entire contest. Joksimovic netted a team-high four goals while Cooper Dolan ’20 chipped in three of his own. Six different players netted goals for the Bison during the match, making it difficult for the Midshipmen defenders to isolate one individual player.
On Sept. 30, in their final match of the weekend, the Bison battled in a thriller against Johns Hopkins. Combining for 35 goals throughout the entire game, both teams displayed their dynamic offensive capabilities. Djordjevic’s late goal proved to be the difference and the Bison emerged with an 18-17 win.
The Bison started off the Johns Hopkins game strong by jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the first six minutes of the match. However, the Blue Jays battled back to tie the score with 5:04 left in the second quarter. From that point on, neither team led by more than one goal in a back and forth affair.
The Bison had seven different goalscorers in the match, with Logan Schofield ’20 netting a team-high of six goals. Other goalscorers included Djordjevic (three), Jared Stanley ’21 (three), Joksimovic (three), Matt Blackwell ’21 (one), Cullen Jacuzzi ’20 (one), and Jack Lewis ’22 (one).
The Bison return home to prepare for three home games against Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference competition. On Oct. 6, the Bison take on La Salle and Wagner. The Bison will then look to get revenge against George Washington on Oct. 7.
