University Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Matt Ferguson’s last day at the University was Oct. 17. Ferguson will be transferring to the University of Michigan, as he has accepted a new position in the Ross School of Business.

“Departing Bucknell is bittersweet—I have had the privilege of working alongside some talented students and colleagues that I will miss dearly!” Ferguson said. “At the same time, I’m excited to be joining the community at the University of Michigan and working with the students in the Ross School of Business. It’s going to be a new adventure and I’m looking forward to contributing in new ways. Michigan also happens to be home for me, so it will be nice to be closer to friends and family that I have been apart from for the past ten years.”

While Ferguson is moving on to this new position, he has left an impact at the University as he has worked closely with students in Greek life over the past few years. He has worked most directly with those involved in the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils, which provide governance for and represent the various sororities and fraternities on campus.

The Panhellenic Council’s Vice President of Philanthropy and Community Service Emily Pursel ’20 said, “One of the best parts of being on Panhel (and there are a lot of great parts), has been getting to know Matt. Throughout my time working with him he has been nothing but supportive and kind, and a joy to be around. If you’ve met Matt, you can tell that he truly cares about Greek life at Bucknell—he has worked hard to make it safe and fun for everyone, and to change it for the better. Being the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs is not an easy job, and we are lucky to have had someone who lived and loved Greek life like all of us in the Greek community here at Bucknell.”

Currently, Associate Dean of Students Darren Jones will serve as a substitute for Ferguson’s position while the University prepares to hire a new Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs. Jones said, “Matt was a valued colleague, and I appreciate his many contributions to the Bucknell community during his time here.”

Jones also explained the University’s plan to hire a qualified individual, saying, “We will soon launch a national search to fill the position of Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, which is an important role at the University. During the search process, we will seek input from various campus partners with a particular emphasis on students. I will also meet with the leadership of the Greek community to learn about their views on this position and to discuss how members of the Greek community can best engage with candidates we bring to campus.”

Pursel shared her hopes for the new hiree: “I hope that the next Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs shares the same passion and drive that Matt did to change things here at Bucknell for the better.”
