March 28, 2019
The Bison swept Colgate in a three-game series at home by scores 6-1, 10-8, and 9-1 on March 23-24. The Colgate series was the Bison’s first Patriot League series. The Bison’s overall record is now 13-15. Anna Gimmestad ’19 played phenomenally, going 7-for-9 with nine RBIs over the weekend. She increased her batting average to a team-high of .341.
On March 23, in the first game of the series, the Bison outscored the Raiders 6-1. Gimmestad led the team in hits, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Also making some huge contributions defensively were the outfielders, many of which made diving catches to maintain the Bison lead. Trailing by two runs during the first three innings, Colgate put one run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, placing pressure on the Orange and Blue.
In the fifth inning, the Bison scored four runs to secure the lead. Lauren Hadley ’19 hit a single to left field which allowed Nicole Rivait ’22 to score. Next, Gimmestad hit a single to bring in Allyse Volpe ’22. Finally, Taylor Wolfgang ’21 doubled, allowing Gimmestad and Hadley to advance and score.
Raeanne Geffert ’20 pitched another solid game, only letting up four hits total. She also added a pair of strikeouts for the Orange and Blue.
On March 24, the Bison and Raiders competed in a doubleheader. In the first game, Colgate had a 4-3 lead entering the fourth inning, but the Bison batted home six runs in the bottom half of the fourth to lead 9-4. Colgate attempted to come back in the top of the seventh, but Lauren Lichtenwalner ’20 closed the inning with two Raiders’ hitters grounding-out, ending the game.
The second game of the day ended in a mercy rule, as the Bison had five home runs, two of which came from Gimmestad. Marisa Alemany ’20, Hadley, and Wolfgang all contributed home runs as well. Gimmestad’s second home-run was a three-run dinger, giving the Bison an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The contest ended after five innings, and the Bison ended their successful weekend with a 3-0 Patriot League record, 13-15 overall.
“From top to bottom, everyone in our lineup was putting pressure on Colgate’s defense and because of that we were able to produce tons of runs,” Gimmestad said. “Defensively, there were also a few awesome diving catches made that just showed that all of our hard work on defense has paid off.”
The Bison will be back in action when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh in a three-game series on March 30-31.
