Men’s basketball falls to Greyhounds, heads back to MD to face Navy

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Bison traveled to Baltimore, Md. to take on the Loyola Greyhounds. The Bison fought hard to recover from an early deficit against Loyola, but could not complete the comeback. The final score of the game was 78-65 in favor of the Greyhounds.
Despite their fight, the Bison trailed by 13 at halftime after missing their last 12 three-point attempts. However, they turned this around in the second half. In the early minutes of the second half, Avi Toomer ’20 and Andrew Funk ’22 drained threes that cut into the Greyhounds’ lead.
Later in the half, John Meeks ’21 scored two three-pointers, followed by Jimmy Sotos ’21 with one three-pointer. With 4:57 left the play, the Bison were only trailing by one point with a score of 58-57.
The Bison were unable to capitalize following Sotos’ three-pointer. The Greyhounds were able to pull ahead again, making 15 free-throws in the last four minutes of play. Loyola is well-known for their strength from the foul line and is ranked ninth nationally for free-throw attempts.
Stat leaders on the day were Toomer with 15 points, Meeks with 12, Funk with 10 and Bruce Moore ’20 with seven. Meeks also led the team with 10 rebounds.
Paul Newman ’21 spoke to what the Bison will look to focus on in their upcoming game on Wednesday. “We want to focus on defense and getting out in transition so we can get easy points because if we are great on defense it leads to easy offense,” Newman said.
The loss to Loyola moved the Bison to a 5-7 record in the Patriot League.
On Wednesday night, the Men’s Basketball team faced Patriot League opponent, Navy in Annapolis, Md. The team fought a hard battle but ultimately lost in a close final score of 60-59. Funk led the Bison with 20 points on the night but was not able to clinch the victory over the midshipmen. With the conclusion of this game, the Bison moved to a record of 5-8 in the Patriot League.
The Bison face Patriot League opponent, American University, this upcoming Saturday at 2 p.m. and will travel to play Holy Cross on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.
