Men’s and women’s tennis teams rack up victories

The Bison men’s and women’s tennis teams found success over the past weekend. The women finished 2-0, picking up wins over La Salle and Marist on Sunday, Feb. 23. Meanwhile, the men picked up wins against La Salle on Friday, Feb. 21 and the University Of Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 22 while falling in matches to Marist and Penn State.
In their first competition of the weekend on Friday, the Bison women’s tennis team had a near-perfect showing defeating La Salle with a score of 7-0. Daniela Bellini ’22 maintained her unbeaten record in the top singles spot, while Paige Leavy ’20 and Dax Seidlin ’23 stayed perfect in the number one doubles slot. Jill Auteri ’20 and Rachel Carroll ’21 picked up the other two Bison singles wins, while Sofia Ayuso ’21 and Bellini won their doubles match 6-1.
On Sunday, the Bison maintained their unbeaten run with a narrow 4-3 win over Marist. Seidlin and Bellini played well once again, each picking up a singles victory. Ayuso collected the Orange and Blue’s third singles victory by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Auteri and Leavy fought hard but were unable to pull out victories in their singles matches, ultimately falling in three sets each. The Bison were able to secure the victory with doubles victories from the pair of Leavy and Seidlin, who won 6-4, and Ayuso and Bellini, who won 6-0.
“I think we played as a unit. The energy was very high on every court and that made the difference,” Ayuso said. “We’ve been working a lot in our doubles play which was important in this match.”
The men’s tennis team started the weekend strong picking up a 4-0 over La Salle on Friday. Marwan Abaza ’21 continued his strong start to the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the number one singles. Cooper Bradshaw ’22 and Michael Owen ’23 picked up victories in their respective singles matches and then teamed up in doubles on their way to another win. Ryan Jurist ’22 and Abaza also won their doubles match by a score of 6-4.
On Saturday, the Bison faced stiff competition against the University of Connecticut. Abaza, Owens and Guillermo Torres ’23 all picked up singles victories to earn the Bison a total of three points. The final and decisive point for the Bison came from doubles. Owen and Bradshaw won 6-4 in their match and Torress and Ink Chen ’23 won their match 6-2. Four points proved to be enough as the Bison edged the Huskies 4-3.
Matchups against Marist and Penn State on Sunday proved to be more difficult for the Orange and Blue. The Bison fell to Marist by a close score of 4-5. Abanza improved to 9-1 on the season in singles, securing the victory by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Owen and Bradshaw also picked up a victory in doubles to move to 7-1 on the season. Against the Nittany Lions, the Bison played tough; several Bison forced three sets in singles, though they were unable to secure the victories.
With their respective wins, the Bison men sit at a record of 4-5 and the women at a record of 5-2. Up next for the Bison men is a match with Saint Joseph’s University this Saturday. Meanwhile, the Bison women have matchups against Morgan State University this Friday and Binghamton University on Sunday.
