The women’s water polo team traveled to Erie, Pa. to face George Washington, Mercyhurst, VMI, and Gannon at the Mercyhurst Invitational Feb. 18–19. Coming off a strong performance in the Bison Invitational Feb. 10–12, the team sought to keep their momentum rolling.

In their first game of the contest, the Bison fell 9-7 to George Washington. Though the Orange and Blue kept up with the Colonials in the first half, they ultimately fell behind in quarter two, where they suffered a two-goal deficit.

Later that afternoon, the Bison faced Mercyhurst, striding to a 17-5 win over the Lakers. Eight different Bison scored in the team’s effort, one of which included Emily Konishi ’19 with a game-high four goals. Manuela Herrera ’18 started in goal for both contests of the day, totaling 14 saves.

In day two of action, the team continued their dominating performance when they beat VMI 15-8. Drawing 10 ejections throughout the game, the team continued to push the tempo. Marta Considine ’18 scored four goals in the contest, matching Konishi. Playing tough team defense, the team held VMI to a single goal in the second and third quarters. In this victory, Herrera saved 12 potential goals.

In their final game of the tournament, the Bison defeated Gannon 14-11. Six Bison recorded goals while eight recorded assists. Both Herrera and Haley Derrod ’17 saw time in goal. Gannon pushed back in the second half, although they were unable to overcome the Bison.

The Orange and Blue look to continue their success as they open up league play on Feb. 25 when they host Hartwick at 2 p.m.
