Over 100 wildfires are burning across the U.S. West Coast due to high temperatures and strong winds. Oregon governor Kate Brown declared a state of emergency after two small towns in the state were damaged from the fires. As the blaze moved northward, more and more towns were put under evacuation orders. Small towns in Oregon including Medford, Ashland, Talent and Mill City have all experienced significant damages from the wildfires.

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, Gen. Frank McKenzie, commander of U.S. Center Command in the Middle East, announced a drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq from 5,200 to 3,000. The United States was under pressure to withdraw American troops from Iraq after the Trump administration’s decision to kill Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani. In addition to withdrawing troops from Iraq, troops in Afghanistan and Germany are to also be withdrawn in the coming year.

International:

A fire in a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos in Greece left thousands of people in need of emergency shelter. This fire came after a previous one in the Moria camp that was started after camp residents were angered by lockdown and isolation orders that were imposed after 35 people tested positive for the coronavirus. The first fire left nearly 3,500 of the 12,500 residents homeless, with the second blaze now adding to the overall total. The Moria camp was over capacity as well, bringing to light migrant issues in Europe that leave certain countries, like Greece, with a constant influx of refugees.

Since the massive explosion in Beirut, Lebanon an ongoing search to locate a missing person has ended after rescuers failed to find a survivor in the leftover debris from the blast. A Chilean search and rescue team led the mission to find the survivor and on Saturday, Sept. 5 announced that the search was 95% complete and that there were no signs of life from inside the building.
