Women’s Golf places fourth at Navy Invitational

This past weekend, the Bison women’s golf team posted a solid fourth place finish at the Navy Invitational despite the inclement weather. Friday’s opening round saw temperatures in the 40s and winds gusting over 20 miles per hour, which resulted in many elevated scores. Saturday’s conditions did not improve much and continued to challenge the field of players.

“This weekend was really challenging because of the wind. Playing in the wind is always one of the toughest things and it’s truly the only thing that will drive scores up across the board. I think as a team we did the best we could with all of the conditions,” Morgan Sohosky ’23 said.

The Bison entered two full squads and both compiled team scores of 333 for the second day, which brought the team total to 676. The field of competitors included Delaware State, Towson and Navy. Delaware finished in first place with a 654 total score over 36 holes. Towson finished second at 660, followed by Navy (665) and the Bison (676).

Out of the field of 28 individuals, only two players broke 80 on the first day; the Bison’s very own Cristina Canales ’24 was one of them. Canales, who posted a 79 on Friday, finished the Invitational off on Saturday with a score of 85. When asked about her play over the weekend, Canales said, “I went in with the mentality that the less times I hit the ball, the less cold my hands would be.”

Other members of the Orange and Blue were able to better their scores from the day prior, despite the challenging weather that persisted during the second round. In total, the Bison women’s golf team was able to cut 10 strokes off its first-round score.

During the second round, Erin Holmes ’21 and Kelsey Yi ’24 led the Bison with scores of 81 each. Canales and Casey Morrow ’21 tied for fifth as they led the Bison with 164 totals for the weekend. Morgan Hennessy ‘22 (9th) and Holmes (10th) also finished in the top 10.

The Bison look forward to better weather conditions as they are set to host the Bucknell Invitational this upcoming weekend on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.
