Domestic:
On Sunday, the deadliest mass shooting in nearly two years occurred in Shreveport, Louisiana. The gunman killed eight children and wounded two adults. Seven of the victims were children of the attacker, Shamar Elkins. After carrying out the attack, Elkins stole a vehicle, leading to a police pursuit ending in his death.
Recently, a baby bald eagle nesting in West Mifflin, PA underwent surgery after ingesting a fishing hook. The eaglet, which is only about two weeks old, lives in a nest on U.S. Steel Plant property. A live camera feed caught the bird struggling, with a fishing line protruding from its mouth. Before rescuing the bird, it was necessary for wildlife rehabilitation experts to obtain approval from state and federal regulators. The eaglet’s surgery was successful and it may be returned to its family in about a week.
International:
Flooding in New Zealand caused a state of emergency to be declared for its capital, Wellington. The city received three inches of rain in less than an hour, leading to flash floods and landslides. Residents in low lying areas were urged to relocate to higher ground.
A life jacket worn by a Titanic survivor recently sold for $900,000 in a telephone auction led by West-England auctionhouse Henry Aldridge & Son. The piece was worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli and was signed by her and others in the life boat. It is made of canvas with cork-filled sections and is the only life jacket from the Titanic to be auctioned. Francatelli survived the disaster in Lifeboat 1, which had the capacity for 40 people, but only carried 12.
