Last week, the bright lights of the legendary Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Spain, beamed down upon the first of a two-leg quarterfinal matchup between infamous La Liga foes in the UEFA Champions League.
The home side, Barcelona, came in as favorites over not Real Madrid, but Atletico Madrid. Barca, a club known for housing young talent, is led by highly regarded teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Yamal, who finished second in Ballon d’Or voting last year, is looking to take home the award at the end of the calendar year and a Champions League victory would be a major boost to his resume.
However, to reach that stage, he still needs to tackle Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, a club known for its veteran leadership and strong defensive capabilities.
The opening leg did not go as planned for the Catalans, as Atletico Madrid found a way to stop the vivacious Barca attack for much of the first and second half. The big break came in the dying embers of the first half, when defender Pau Cubarsí was sent off with a red card, leaving Barcelona with a man down.
In the 45th minute, Julián Alvarez took advantage, scoring first for Atletico with a beautiful goal to make the score 1-0. In the 70th minute, Norwegian Alexander Sørloth knocked home the second goal for the visitors, making the score 2-0, a result that would hold until the final whistle blew. Barca now faces not only a 2-0 deficit but also the need to outplay Atletico in Madrid.
Despite the loss, Lamine Yamal and Barcelona fans around the world were still hopeful and confident in the squad’s ability to pull off the comeback and as the opening whistle blew, it truly did seem like Barca was up to the challenge. Who else but Lamine Yamal in the fourth minute, firing home a goal to make the score 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate.
Needing one more to tie, forward Ferran Torres secured Barca’s second goal in the 24th minute to bring the aggregate score level at two. However, the loss of Pau Cubarsi loomed large for the Barcelona defense and with the strong Atletico Ultras pushing their team on, Ademola Lookman, who is known for meeting the moment, fired a goal to give Atletico Madrid the lead right back just seven minutes after Torres’s goal.
Atletico is known for its strong defensive tactics and those tactics, along with a red card given to Barcelona’s Eric García late in the match, secured a 3-2 aggregate victory for Atletico Madrid.
The loss for Barcelona comes as a shock and as a heartbreak; however, they are still the favorites to win La Liga at the end of this season. For Atletico, they reach the UCL semi-finals for the first time in nearly a decade, continuing their quest for European glory.
