Soccer’s biggest club tournament has reached its boiling point; the UEFA Champions League is in full swing with the play-offs beginning this week. On Tuesday, Galatasaray hosted Juventus from Serie A in a monumental UCL play-off showdown in Istanbul.
The two sides have had strong starts to their respective seasons, with Juventus currently fifth in a tight and competitive Serie A and Galatasaray in first in the Turkish Super Lig. During the UCL group stage, Juventus had a very strong showing, finishing 13th out of 36 with just one loss in eight matches. Galatasaray, known for their energy and aggressive play style, finished 20th, winning three of their eight matches.
Both teams, however, qualified for a two-leg playoff round with the aggregate winner advancing to the round of 16. Entering this matchup, Juventus was considered heavy favorites, but the energy of Galatasaray and their fans isn’t something to take lightly.
The match began just the way Galatasaray wanted, with an early goal in the 15th minute by Gabriel Sara. The 1-0 lead wouldn’t last very long as just one minute later, Dutchman Teun Koopmeiners, knocked home the equalizer.
Koopmeiners would deliver once again in the 32nd minute to make it 2-1 as the sides entered the half. Gala entered the second half knowing that a win in the first leg would be crucial to their chances of qualifying for the round of 16. As the second half whistle blew and the Turkish ultras rained chants onto the pitch, Galatasaray leveled the match at two apiece after Noa Lang fired in the equalizer. Ten minutes later, Gala would take the lead 3-2.
Juve, now finding themselves behind, struggled to break the Galatasaray defence. In the 67th minute, Juventus would take another blow after Juan Cabal was sent off after drawing a red card. The Turkish giants would take advantage, scoring not one but two more goals to commandingly win the first leg, 5-2.
When looking deeper into the match, Galatasaray completely dominated Juventus. Juve, who had a lead entering the half, now finds themselves down three goals as they fly back to Turin, Italy.
Again, the play-offs are two legs, meaning that Juventus still has a chance to come back and advance to the knockout stage. European comebacks are never impossible, but after a five-goal statement under the Istanbul lights, it appears the path to the round of 16 remains firmly within the grasp of Galatasaray.
