Early this week, a nor’easter hit much of the East Coast, breaking records in some places. Providence, Rhode Island experienced more than 37.9 inches of snow, surpassing the previous max of 1978’s 28.6”. The Boston Globe newspaper delayed its print edition for the first time in its 153 year history. A nor’easter is a storm along the East Coast, named because the winds that form the storm are typically from the northeast. They are formed when cold air meets warm air moving up the East Coast, creating a low pressure system.
A man has been killed while attempting to enter President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. The man, identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, had been reported missing by his family. He entered the property armed with a shotgun and a fuel can. The Secret Service warned him to drop both items. After dropping the fuel can, he allegedly raised the shotgun to the firing position, after which agents shot at him.

For the first time in over 150 years, giant tortoises are roaming free on the Galápagos island of Floreana. Floreana’s native giant tortoise species, the Chelonoidis niger niger, was hunted to extinction in the early 1800s. As part of the Floreana Ecological Restoration Project, 158 captive bred tortoises were released. The discovery of tortoises on Wolf Volcano on Isabela island in 2008 helped jumpstart the project, as those found on the volcano shared several similarities with the extinct species.
The leader of a Mexican drug cartel who was known as “El Mencho” has been killed in a military operation. Nemesio Oseguera-Cervantes, the crime lord’s legal name, was the most wanted man in Mexico. After his death, cartel members across the country reacted violently, setting cars and buses on fire. Numerous flights were cancelled, leaving those trying to get into or out of the country scrambling to form new plans.
