Baseball has successful weekend against Navy

The Bison baseball team had a great weekend on the baseball field as they took two of three games against the Navy Midshipman. Capturing those two games puts them firmly back into the Patriot league conversation and is the boost that they needed going forward.

The contests started Saturday with a double header that was contentious the entire way. In game one, a few extra innings and a great performance by ace Brenden Tuttle ’21 to edge the Midshipman 4-2. In the first outing, Tuttle threw for five innings, recorded eight strikeouts and had zero earned runs. After that, an impressive relief effort by Anthony Casciola ’23, meant that the Midshipmen could only bring in two runs the entire afternoon. The game still had to go to extra innings however before it could be decided. The Bison turned up the dial in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 advantage. One run was added in bottom of the ninth to even the score and after it was all over the Bison took home a 4-2 win.

The second game of the double header was another thriller, as the Bison held a 5-4 lead going into the eighth inning; however, two runs by the Midshipman in the bottom of the eighth helped carry them to a 6-5 win over the Bison. Game two was marked by an impressive performance by infielder Caleb Broughton ’21, who went an impressive 4-5 with two RBI’s in the second leg of the double header. Although his personal performance does not make up for the loss, Broughton’s performances on Saturday and Sunday earned him Patriot League Player of the Week honors. The Bison went into their Sunday contest against the Midshipman with a split doubleheader and were ready to have a big Sunday.

“I am really proud of the way the boys performed this weekend against a talented Navy squad. We need to continue keeping up this energy as we move into the final few weeks of the regular season,” Broughton said.

The final game of the weekend was a stand alone contest in Lewisburg. Sunday’s performance was the dominating win that the Bison needed to end the weekend. In one of the most impressive outings of the season, the Bison used heavy hitting and solid pitching to blow by the Midshipman 10-2. Chris Difiore ’23, the reigning Patriot league pitcher of the week, got the starting nod and performed like an all-league pitcher. In four innings of work he did not allow any earned runs and recorded a strike out. Chris Cannizzaro ’22 had the most impressive hitting performance of the afternoon, recording three RBIs on two hits in five appearances at the plate. All around, this was one of the most impressive wins of the season for the Bison and an energy that they want to bring with them for the remainder of the season.

The Bison have only three weeks left of the regular season and are excited to start stringing some wins together. Next weekend they face a familiar Patriot League opponent, Lehigh, in a three game series that kicks off with a double header on Saturday April 24. Currently sitting at 8-16 with an 8-12 Patriot league record, The Bison want to finish the remainder of the season strong as they know they can.
