The Bison women’s rowing team had a competition against the University of Delaware this past Saturday, April 17. Women’s rowing hosted the competition here in Lewisburg, on the Shamokin Dam. The Bison were victorious over the Blue Hens with the V8 group and the 2v8 group.

The V8 was guided by coxswain Juliette Gaggini ’24. The rest of the members on the boat were Natalie Kreush’22, Erin Sullivan ’22, Casey Miller ‘21, Caroline Brandt ’23, Maddie Wickers ’23, Olivia Zavrel ’21, Elizabeth Berlinger ’23 and Caitlin Cobb ’21. The eight of them covered the 2,000 meter course in 5:56.54. This time was nearly 12 seconds faster than the Blue Hens.

“The Varsity 8 had an awesome race against the University of Delaware this past weekend, and they put up a great fight,” Wickers said. “We were rowing with the current so it was a speedy race, we took the lead early on and ended up beating them by about 12 seconds in our 2,000 meter race.  After this weekend, everyone is excited to race UConn this weekend and hopefully take home another win!”

Team members in the 2v8 group were guided by Caroline Lopez ’24. Other members included Chloe Segal ’23, Christina DeMola ’23, Katie Slade ’21, Kassia Schubert ’21, Caroline Keating ’22, Olivia Smith ’21, Kate Meerscheidt ’22 and Meredith Newman ’21. The 2v8 group finished their competition with the time 6:16.58, a 10-second win over the Blue Hens.

“Delaware put up a good fight this weekend but it wasn’t enough to outrace our boats,” Lopez said. “Saturday featured many exciting races and some impressive wins. Can’t wait to see where our hard work will take us in these upcoming weeks. Go Bison.”

Women’s rowing’s next competition will be held at home, on the Shamokin Dam against Connecticut on Saturday, April 24 at 9 a.m.
