The Bison men’s track and field team is off to a great start this season, especially after their first-place win in the Gulden Invite this past weekend that took place in the Gerhard Fieldhouse. This event was the first scored meet of the season. Thrower, Anthony Zamarra ’23, racked up points for the team by coming in second in the shot put at the invite. Earlier in the season, Zamarra also finished first in the shot put in the Bison Opener, and sixth place at the Nittany Lion Challenge at State College.

The junior speaks on his team’s accomplishments. “Being able to win this weekend was great and it was our first chance to compete in a scored meet. After a very tough Penn State week last weekend and a tough training camp, I think all of the guys are happy to be where they are at in terms of times and distances,” Zamarra said.

His contributions to the team have not just been during this season. He has been a crucial member of the throwers since his first year, as he even received the honor of being granted team Rookie of the Year in the 2019-2020 season. During his rookie campaign, Zamarra placed 1oth in the Sykes and Sabock Challenge at State College, and 15th at the IC4A championship in Boston. This season fell short, however, due to COVID-19.

His sophomore year, the season was also abbreviated, but Zamarra still managed to have a successful run. He earned himself the title of the seventh-best all-time thrower in University history in a meet against UMBC and Saint Francis, and throughout the season earned a third-place victory in a meet against Army and Lehigh, as well as a fourth-place finish in the Patriot League Championship.

Alongside all of his personal successes, Zamarra has a great relationship with the entire track and field team. “The entire men’s track and field team gets along at Bucknell. It’s awesome that I am friends with cross country runners and shot put throwers,” Zamarra said.

Zamarra and the Orange and Blue compete again this upcoming weekend at the Bison Open and Multi in our very own Gerhard Fieldhouse.
