Bison Baseball Suffers Mixed Results

The Bison fell just short of knocking off its second Power-5 opponent this season, falling 7-6 to Penn State on Wednesday evening. The Orange and Blue’s first night game of the season, the Bison led 5-0, but a resurgent Penn State squad scored seven unanswered runs from the first inning to the fourth in taking a narrow victory.

The Bison then faced the Lafayette Leopards at home and went 2-1 on the weekend, winning the series. Will Greer ’23 improved to 5-0 on the season with his second straight complete-game victory allowing only three hits over seven innings. Grant Voytovich ’24 brought in Anthony Sherwin ’24 for a 1-0 lead in the first. Sherwin was brought around the bases again by Chris Cannizzaro ’22 to bring the lead to 2-0. Brendan Lowery ’22 ripped another double down the left field line to bring Cannizzaro in for a 3-0 lead, capping off the runs for the Bison.

Greer cruised through the next few innings, retiring six straight batters. Greer’s five wins are the most by a Bison in a single season since teammate Chris DiFiore ’23 managed five last season, and the tenth of his career. The Bison managed seven hits as a team, with catcher Logan Kellerman ’22 posting a 2-for-2 day at the plate. Cannizzaro knocked his sixth double of the season in the win, while Sherwin added a hit and two runs scored.

Lafayette started hot, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning in never trailing in game two, going on to take a 7-2 win to earn the split on the day. The Bison pulled within three, 5-2, in the eighth, but two insurance runs by the Leopards in the ninth ensured a 1-1 day for the visitors.

Despite the Bison getting the first two outs of the game prior to any runs on the board, the Leopards rallied for a 3-0 lead in the first. As the Bison got behind the plate, Voytovich brought Cannizzaro in on an RBI single and Lowery’s RBI single brought the Bison within three. The Leopards kept their foot on the gas in the ninth by adding two more runs to take a 7-2 win.

The Bison secured a regular-season series victory over Lafayette by winning its third game of the season against the Leopards. The Orange and Blue used a four-run first and a three-run third in support of Austin Odells ’22 fourth win of the season, taking the season series over Lafayette with a 7-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Four of the Bison’s first five batters reached via a walk or a hit by pitch as the Bison walked in two runs with the bases loaded with Tyler Dunn ’25 and Sean Keys ’25 at the plate. Kellerman then made his contribution on the offensive end, knocking a two-RBI single to center field that scored both Dunn and Jacob Corson ’24 to give the Bison a 4-0 lead. Kellerman led the team with a career best of three hits, two of which were RBI’s. The Orange and Blue put three more runs around the bases to top it off at seven.

The Bison fell 10-4 on the road at Villanova in Tuesday non-conference action to the Wildcats.  The Wildcats used a five-run fifth to pull away from the Bison, despite two RBI singles from Voytovich.

“Winning this weekend’s series gave us a lot of momentum for this weekend’s series at Holy Cross. Every game from here on out is pivotal for our rankings in the league. We just have to keep playing how we’ve been and come up big this weekend,” Greer said.

The Bison will have the opportunity to avenge their loss to Penn State when they take on Holy Cross this coming weekend. The Bison will have two games on Saturday and one game on Sunday all on the road in Massachusetts.
