The Orange and Blue Water Polo team came up short against Brown in the first round of the CWPA Tournament. The Bison lost 17-8 on Friday afternoon, sending them to the consolation bracket of the tournament. 

The Bison had the first goal of the game, scored by lefty Boati Motau ’25. She threw the ball to the bottom of the goal, giving the Orange and Blue an early lead. Brown responded quickly, scoring four unanswered goals going into the second half. Motau also scored the Bison’s second goal of the game off an assist by Paige Furano ’22. Brown scored two more goals, taking a 6-2 lead against the Bison. Larissa Hodzic ’22 scored two goals, closing Brown’s lead to 6-4. 

Time was running out for the Bison, with the Bear outscoring the Orange and Blue 4-1 at the end of the second quarter. Bella Moynihan ’23 had the Bison goal in this stretch. Brown ended up winning the game, winning 17-8 while knocking out the Bison of the CWPA Championship. 

The goals in this match were scored by Hodzic (2), Motau (2) and Furano (1), along with Caroline Oates ’25 (1), Moynihan (1), and Isabelle Monaghan ’24 (1). Assists were provided by Furano (3), Chloe Smith ’23 (2), and Motau (1). Exclusions drawn were by Hodzic (5), Furano (2), and Monaghan (1). Steals were Emma Molaski ’24 (2), Furano (1), Motau (1), Moynihan (1), Sidney Finkler ‘25 (1), and Sam Gove ‘23 (1). Gove had five saves, playing a total of 32 minutes. 

“It was a tough game!” Hodzic said. “We went into it looking for a win so we came out playing really hard but it wasn’t enough to hold Brown back. Obviously it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but we will use the loss as motivation for Saturday’s game against Mount St. Mary.” 

In the consolation tournament, the Bison played two games. They defeated Mount St. Mary’s 27-9 on Saturday, but then fell to Saint Francis (PA) 6-8 on Sunday.

The offense took center stage in the match against Mount St. Mary’s. Monaghan led the way with a program-record of 10 goals as the Bison scored a program-record 27 goals. The Bison offense started early, scoring the first six goals of the match and never looking back. Following a goal for Mount, the Bison scored three more goals courtesy of Motau (2) and Smith (1) to take an 8-1 lead at the end of the first. This later turned into a 13-5 advantage going into halftime.

In total, ten different Bison scored goals in the match. In addition to Monaghan, Ali Jackson ’25 (4), Furano (3), Hodzic (2), Motau (2), and Finkler (2) all scored. Furano also had seven assists in the match which was one shy of the program record. Motau also had a stellar day passing the ball on her way to six assists. Annika Lampen ’25 started in goal for the Bison and made ten saves and had two steals. 

In their final match of the season, the Bison fell 8-6 to Saint Francis (PA) in overtime. The Bison took an early advantage in the game by scoring three of the first four goals courtesy of two goals by Smith and one from Motau. Smith scored again late in the first half and the Bison went into halftime up 4-2. 

Smith scored yet again in the third quarter to restore the Bison’s three-goal advantage, but the Red Flash scored three unanswered goals to send the game to overtime. The first overtime period was scoreless until the Red Flash took the lead with a goal with nine seconds remaining. The Bison managed to tie up the game with a goal from Moynihan. The Red Flash would go on to score the last two goals of the match to win the contest 8-6. 

Smith led the way for the Bison offensively with four goals while Motau and Moynihan each scored a goal. Furano had a team-high two assists in the contest. Gove started in the cage for the Bison and made a career-best 14 saves.

The match was the last of the season for the team and the last game for seniors Paige Furano and Larissa Hodzic. The Bison will look to use the offseason to improve and play even better next season.
