Men’s Soccer faced off against two out-of-conference teams in the last few days, going 1-1. After their match against Mount St. Mary’s was postponed from Thursday to Saturday, Aug. 31, the Bison beat the Mountaineers 2-0 at home. On Tuesday, Sept. 3, George Mason ended the Bison’s win streak, with Bucknell falling 1-0.
The first goal came for the Bison in the 26th minute. After a yellow card on a Mount player, Jack Lucas ’27 took a penalty kick and sank the ball into the left corner of the net.
The next goal came in the second half of the match, off of a corner kick. The short corner was played to Lucas, who sent the ball into the mass of people, which was then headed into the goal by Ben Sheffield ’26.
For the duration of the game, Bucknell kept strong offensive pressure, with 20 shots on goal, dominating the Mountaineers’ six. Bison goalie Freddie Lapworth ’26 also had a strong game, with his second shutout in a row.
The Bison then entered the match at George Mason this past Saturday 2-0 on the season and looking to keep their momentum rolling. In a dogfight of a contest, the Bison ultimately fell.
The lone goal of the match came in the 15th minute as George Mason scored on its only shot on frame throughout the entire bout thanks to a stellar defensive stand from the Bison. Though Bucknell’s press kept the Patriots out of scoring position for the majority of this one, that lone strike was all the team needed to edge out the Bison.
Bucknell’s defensive unit of Aidan Lawlor ’25, Jackson Sullivan ’26 and Sheffield held George Mason to just eight total shots. Bucknell led the shot category 12-8, yet there were only three shots on goal in this defensive battle, two of those credited to the Bison. Only one goal was allowed by the Bison, the first of the season.
The lone opportunity for the Orange and Blue came in the 64th minute when a free kick by David Krumov ’27 was headed in by Cade Whitmire ’27, but an offsides flag reversed the score, keeping Bucknell in the deficit.
Coming into Saturday, Bucknell had outscored their opponents 4-0 through the first two matches combined, and the team’s strong defensive anchors proved true again besides the one that got past them.
Next up, the Bison host Saint Francis on Sept. 7.
