Bison Men’s Soccer played St. Francis University Saturday, Sept. 7. The match resulted in a second straight loss for the Bison, 3-0.
The Orange and Blue fought admirably, producing a total of eight shots, only one shot short of St. Francis’ winning total. The first goal was scored in the 20th minute of the game by the Red Flash, who evaded Bison goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth ’26. Despite this, the Bison still held two saves against St. Francis. The next goal was scored later in the first half at the 40th minute mark from the opponent. The Bison concluded the half with five shots and three corner kicks.
“St. Francis came in 1-3, but is essentially the same team that went 14-1-3 last year and who we lost to at their place in a very tight 1-0 game, so we knew they were very good and had just had a slow start.” Head Coach David Brandt said, “After the good start we had made to the young season, [we] weren’t at our best.”
The second half was quieter on goals but produced plenty of fouls: a whopping seven from each team. During the 77th minute, St. Francis scored its final goal, leading the match 3-0. The Bison kept fighting with three more attempted shots yet were unable to connect with the net. This concluded the loss for the Bison.
“St. Francis is largely composed of highly experienced German and other European players and… while we certainly played hard, [we] did not play with the same level of steel and commitment to winning as they did.” Coach Brandt shared, “The game was much closer than the final score line would say, again, in retrospect, we weren’t sharp enough against a very determined and highly experienced team.”
However, before the match, the Bison were able to honor and celebrate the program’s 1970s-era teams. Over 20 alumni were in attendance. “It was awesome to have them back to honor them and have them see us go to battle just like they did many years ago,” forward Drew Roskos ’28 said. Roskos led the Bison in shots on goal in this match with two total. “Disappointed in the results we produced for them but our season does not end here,” he said.
The Bison compete next against Navy this Saturday, Sept. 14 to start league play.
“The morale will continue through the whole season no matter the circumstances,” Roskos said.
The Orange and Blue will enter the match with a 2-2 record against the 1-2-2 Midshipmen.
