It was a winning weekend for Bison Men’s Tennis as their season started with a perfect record of 27-0 in singles and 9-4 in doubles at home. The Orange and Blue hosted an invitational with Millersville, Mount St. Mary’s, Saint Francis and Lafayette. The first day concluded with an 18-0 domination in singles and 3-2 in doubles performance from Bucknell, as well as one medical default.
“It certainly helped to have some fans out to cheer us on and be in a familiar setting.” Coach Cohen said. “The guys have also been working very hard to start the fall season and I think that showed in our play and our effort compared to the other teams we faced this weekend.”
Nine players won two matches each, with Amar Tahirovic ’26 winning 6-1, 6-1 over Mount St. Mary’s and 6-2, 6-2 over Lafayette. Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega ’26 also beat Mount St. Mary’s and Millersville. First-years Oumar Diallo ’28, Felix Steindl ’28, Nelson Alapi ’28 and Shiv Singh ’28 all contributed to the massive victory by winning all their singles matches. Diallo took an impressive victory over Mount St. Mary’s 6-0, 6-1. Returners Brendan McDonald ’26 and Liam Kilmer ’27 also won their matches in straight sets. Adam Stavrakas ’26 came back and won his match 3-6, 7-5, 12-10 over Lafayette.
The Bison continued the energy into Sunday with nine more singles wins. Tahirovic went 6-0, 6-1 against St. Francis, along with Stavrakas going 6-0, 6-4 against them as well. Kilmer, Diallo, Singh and Steindl all swept Lafayette. McDonald took a clean victory from Mount St. Mary’s 6-2, 6-4. Doubles pairs McDonald/ Steindl and Stavrakas/Alapi won twice each to go 3-0 for the weekend. Tahirovic/Bain and Singh/Kilmer finished 1-1 for the weekend.
“A highlight was certainly going 27-0 in singles and having everyone on the team be able to compete.” Coach Cohen shared. “A lot of upcoming events we’ll only take 4 guys to so it was great to everyone out supporting each other. We still had solid results for doubles but lost a couple matches so we can always improve on that as singles went pretty well.”
The Bison will continue their season on Sept. 20, 21 and 22 at Carnegie Mellon for another invitational.
