Over the last week, Bucknell Men’s Soccer faced off against American University and No. 7 West Virginia. The Bison defeated American 1-0 and fell to the Mountaineers 1-0.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Bison earned a 1-0 victory over American. David Krumov ’27 scored his first career goal in the ninth minute. He stepped through to intercept an outlet from the American goalkeeper, dribbled past one defender then rocketed a shot to the top of the net.
During the game, eight subs saw the field, including first years Collin Sullivan and Noah Handzel.
The Bucknell defensive line of Ben Sheffield ’26, Jack Roberto ’25, Jackson Sullivan ’26 and Jack Lucas ’27 were instrumental in holding off the American forwards. For most of the first half, Bucknell remained in possession.
The Orange and Blue kept the momentum going in the second half with a quality shot on goal in the 58th minute from Cade McGrath ’26.
With 12:06 left, J. Sullivan was shown his second yellow card of the night, sending him off for the remainder of the game and causing his team to continue with only 10 players. Still, with only Krumov’s goal on the board, the Bison walked away with a win.
On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Bucknell hosted West Virginia at home and lost in a close 1-0 decision.
Bucknell came into the Patriot League this year as the top-ranked defensive team. In this game, the Bison were missing two of their superstar veteran center backs. Aidan Lawlor ’25 is out with an injury and J. Sullivan was unavailable due to his red card against American. Filling in for Lawlor was Roberto, and J. Sullivan’s younger brother, C. Sullivan, took his place.
Three other defenders who received quality minutes were Charlie Sorensen ’28, Handzel and Matt McLeod ’28.
The only goal of the game was let up after 64 seconds of play assisted by a West Virginia player who was a first-round pick by the Minnesota United FC in the MLS SuperDraft.
After this, the Bison settled into the game and were able to have several chances to even it out with shots by Lucas, Winston Oziri ’27 and Mason Lillis ’27.
Bucknell goalie Freddie Lapworth ’26 tallied six saves over the course of the game.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, Bucknell returns to Patriot League play as they host Lehigh under the lights at 7 p.m.
