The heart of Lewisburg will come alive this Saturday as Bucknell University and the Lewisburg Borough co-host the second annual International Festival at Hufnagle Park. From 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., the afternoon will be filled with music, dance, food and community, a vibrant celebration of cultures from across the globe. The park itself will transform into a lively meeting ground, where familiar spaces take on new colors, sounds and scents from around the world.
The festival was first imagined and launched last year as a way to bring Bucknell and the wider Lewisburg community together. At a time when the world often seemed to lean toward division, the idea of creating a space devoted to celebrating different identities felt both bold and uncertain. Could such an event succeed in a small town? Would it truly resonate?
The answer was a resounding yes. The inaugural festival was met with warmth and enthusiasm, drawing students, families and local residents into a shared space of appreciation and joy. What began as a daring idea quickly grew into a beautiful reality, a festival that honored each culture for who they are and what they bring to the shared fabric of community life. It showed that even in a small town, people carry stories and traditions that, when shared, create something extraordinary.
For me, arriving in Lewisburg as a first-year student, the impact of that first festival was unforgettable. In a community where connections are not always easy to build, the festival opened a door. I met people I had not known were here, neighbors and families from South Asian and other cultural backgrounds who shared traditions close to mine, but whom I might never have met otherwise. What started that day turned into lasting friendships and a sense of belonging that continues to grow. That is the gift of this festival: it brings people together who might otherwise never meet, and in doing so, creates bonds that feel like family.
This year, the vision continues to unfold on a bigger scale. With the Lewisburg Borough stepping in as a co-lead, the festival is expanding its reach. Alongside the colorful procession of flags and the array of food trucks offering global flavors, the event will now feature a live band performance, adding an even greater energy to the celebration. For families visiting during Bucknell’s Family Weekend, the timing could not be more perfect. The festival is a reminder of what family truly means, not only those we are born into, but also the ones we build when we gather to celebrate, share and connect.
So whether you are a student, a parent, a neighbor or simply someone curious to experience the beauty of cultures side by side, this is the moment to join in. The International Festival has already proven itself as more than just an event. It is a celebration of shared humanity, a tradition in the making and a place where communities come together under a canopy of culture, tradition and hope. By showing up, we keep alive the simple truth that unity is not abstract—it is lived, felt and celebrated in moments like these.
