After an almost 10-year gap between movies, the Horsemen are back to cap off the “Now You See Me” trilogy! It’s been a long time coming for this film and fans were very excited when it was finally announced to be official! Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher, the group teams up with newcomers Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt and Justice Smith to take down our villain, Rosamund Pike. While the first 2 films were solid installments in this series, does the 3rd film have what it takes to stay at the same level?
“Now You See Me Now You Don’t” captures the same action and magic that the first two films have and more! It’s filled with even more tricks and turns than ever before. While going into it, I was skeptical because I’m not a big fan of sequels, but this film delivered especially on the big screen! I found myself trying to hate on it, but instead just enjoying it more and more! The acting is still fun, the lines are witty and the mystery unravels right in front of your eyes! It’s wildly creative and dare I say, a bold film that promises a lot and then matches those expectations. Dominic Sessa is my favorite actor from the cast, as he just delivers such a great performance on screen. The cast all around put up solid performances, though, and it’s great to see these famous faces reunite. It’s a classic guilty pleasure movie that people will continue to watch and remember as they look back on this trilogy.
While there are good parts, this movie has noticeable rough spots, too. Some of the dialogue is very cheesy and very rough. These movies have always struggled not to sound cringy, and this movie doesn’t change the norm. On top of that, the story isn’t my favorite. I think the idea is interesting, but this movie didn’t really grab my attention until about halfway through. There just isn’t a well-developed plot at all, struggling with character development, the audience not caring about the story and irritating moments. It can be rushed at times, causing the movie to fly by with not much happening. The biggest drawback of this film, without spoiling too much, is the decision to kill off a supporting character for no reason. There was no purpose for this person’s death, and I don’t understand why the writers decided to do it. Although it’s not cluttered with frustrating things taking away from enjoying this film, there are some points where I was just frustrated by what was going on.
If you have a chance to catch this film, I would definitely recommend it! Unless you’re a super fan of these films, I would wait until it comes to streaming to check out this one. It’s a perfect movie night film if you don’t know what to watch and are looking for something creative. Personally, I will still choose “The Prestige” (highly highly recommended!) as my magic movie when I get that urge, but this is a great alternative and entertaining watch. “Now You See: Me Now You Don’t” is a great time for fans who enjoy these films, and it delivers a decently satisfying conclusion for this magical trilogy!
