Social Media: Meta (formerly Facebook) and Google were found liable in a social media addiction trial launched by a 20 year-old woman known as KGM. The jury awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages to KGM. The jury ruled that both companies designed and operated their platforms in a negligent manner, which adversely affected KGM’s mental health. The jurors also found that both companies were aware of the dangers their products posed to minors, but failed to safely warn users. With Meta bearing 70% of the responsibility, both companies have issued statements indicating that they plan to appeal the verdict. The decision could potentially set a precedent for other lawsuits to be filed against social media companies. TikTok and Snapchat were defendants in the case, but settled before it went to trial.
In a separate case in New Mexico, a jury found that Meta’s platforms, which include Facebook and Instagram, are harmful to minors’ mental health by failing to adequately protect them from child predators. Meta was fined $375 million for being in violation of New Mexico’s consumer protection laws.
