With the announcement of Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” I’m feeling a huge case of “deja vu.” The release of “SOUR” when I was seventeen genuinely changed the trajectory of my life. The album got me through so much; I remember playing it nonstop as I got my “driver’s license.” It truly was my “favorite crime.”
I will say it was quite “brutal” to wait until 2023 for the GUTS album; however, 19-year-old me quickly became “obsessed” with its tracks. Through the “ballad of a homeschooled girl,” I learned that within this “teenage dream,” “love is embarrassing” and that the “girl I’ve always been” will be the one, every night, “making the bed.” Maybe I’ll “get him back!” (or not), but running it back isn’t always a “bad idea, right?”
If my puns haven’t deterred you from reading this, welcome. I’ve got good news to share. And yes, it’s about Olivia Rodrigo. On Thursday, April 2, Rodrigo announced that she will be releasing a third studio album, “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” on June 12. And what better way to spend the summer than sad… and in love? She also announced a single from the album, “drop dead,” will be released on April 17, 2026.
The purpleness of the punk rock pop princess will be missed, as this album appears to have strayed from the shade we once knew and loved. After a pink mural wall bearing her initials popped up in Los Angeles, fans had speculated the album would be pink-themed, and right they were. Rodrigo posted the new album cover to her Instagram, a dreamy, dare I say whimsical photo of her smiling in a pink dress upside down on a swing, confirming the fans’ suspicions.
Following Rodrigo’s announcement, producer Dan Nigro, of the singer’s past two albums and the upcoming one, wrote on Instagram saying, “Olivia and I made an album,” “I’m pretty excited about it!”
The album is reported to have 13 tracks, and the titles are yet to be announced. In an interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo spilled that it’s an album of “sad love songs.”
“I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” she explained to the magazine. “I felt a similar way about falling in love, that the second I’m in a really great relationship, I’m gonna start feeling good about myself, and this stuff is going to fall into place,” she added. “But it just doesn’t work like that.”
The publication teased that one song on the album will consist of a “dreamier, hazier” vibe; Rodrigo said that the track was inspired by a moment in “Sex and the City” when Miranda tells Steve, “Whenever something funny happens, I always want to tell you about it.”
I, for one, will be looking forward to feeling all the feels this summer with this new album.
Doesn’t this news make you want to well… “drop dead”?
