Wrestling pins a win against Sacred Heart

The wrestling team went on the road on Feb. 9 to challenge Army and Sacred Heart in separate matches. After losing 24-11 to Army, the Bison drove to Fairfield, Conn. to dismantle Sacred Heart 36-6, thanks to Tyler Lyster ’15 and Joe Stolfi ’15 closing out the match with back-to-back pins.

“Overall, our team wrestled alright,” Paul Petrov ’16 said. “There were a couple of close matches that we lost (against Army), where I felt that we could have definitely won. In these matches, we just made a few mistakes; however, it is not the end of the world because we still have time left in the season to fix them.”

If a few things went the Bison’s way against Army, the Orange and the Blue could have had two victories on the day. The Bison’s 11 points came from two major decisions from Petrov and Stolfi as well as a decision from Victor Lopez ’17. Lyster, Rustin Barrick ’16, and Grim Gonzalez ’17 all lost by just two points. If they had each pulled off the personal wins, the Orange and Blue would have been 2-0 on the day.

Petrov, Lopez, and Stolfi won bouts in both matches on Sunday to increase their individual win streaks to four, seven, and 11, respectively. Stolfi’s pin against Sacred Heart was his 18th of the year, which puts him at second in the country in pins. Gonzalez, Connor Lapresi ’17, Ray Schlitt ’15, Barrick, and Rory Bonner ’17 also won their matches against Sacred Heart.

The Bison are now 8-10 on the season (4-3 in EIWA matches) and 3-0 all-time against Sacred Heart. Their next match will be tonight at Franklin & Marshall at 7:30 p.m.
