The women’s tennis team opened their Patriot League play this past Saturday, as they faced off against new league member Loyola (Md.), in what was also their first outdoor match on the home courts this year. While the sun was out in beautiful display, strong winds played a factor in the matches.

The Bison posted wins at No.1 and No.2 doubles and No.2, No.3, No.4, and No.5 singles.  Maria Cioffi ’16 (No.2)  and Michele Urbinati ’17 (No.4)  posted straight-set single victories while Stephanie Pino ’16 (No.5)  bounced back from a first set loss to win her match. Lydia Colvin ’15 (No.3) clinched the match for the Orange and Blue as she also came back from a first-set loss to win her match (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).

“This weekend, our team was challenged by playing with heavy winds, an extremely tough weather condition for our sport that prevents us from playing our ‘normal’ or best game. I was extremely proud of my team for our resilience and our determination to win. It was great to see that competitive spirit all across the board. Several of us lost the first sets, including myself, and went on to win the next two sets in order to secure four singles wins. In regards to my individual play, I was proud that I found a way to win despite not having my A game and figured my opponent out. We have high spirits heading into this weekend as we take on three tough teams, and I am excited to see how our hard work will pay off!,” Colvin said.

Overall, the Bison came out with their second win for their last three matches heading into non-league play this upcoming week. The women’s tennis team will head to Villanova and Mount St. Mary’s. Their current record is (2-4) with a (1-0) Patriot League record.
